"You know, I have to say, your mother was probably one of my favorite teachers. And I've always hated English! It's funny how the world works sometimes..."

The nausea had died down, but only slightly. Kimmy, the junior girl who had been her "tour guide" for the morning, was a bit too perky for Julia's rather sullen mood. Seriously though, she had to be a cheerleader or something. How did she stay so happy for so long?

Regardless, Julia knew that Kimmy was just kissing up to her. It was rare that someone her own age liked her mother's teaching methods; they were more favorited among the parents. Although, Tyler hadn't had her as a teacher, and he liked her for the most part...

Julia pushed that last thought from her head as hey approached a nearby classroom. "Okay," Kimmy said. "Here's your biology room for fourth hour. I'd sit through it with you, but I have a free period and my boyfriend promised to take to me lunch today."

As if on cue, an older boy wearing a blue varsity jacket walked up, wrapped his arm around Kimmy's shoulders, and whisked her away.

Julia sighed for what seemed like the millionth time today. As glad as she was to not have to follow an upperclassman around all day, especially when she already knew her way around the school, she hated being abandoned even more. She slowly opened the door and slipped through to the back of the classroom, trying to draw as little attention to herself as possible. Large groups of people had formed around her, and it occurred to Julia that everyone already knew each other here. It was rare that she felt so alone.

Another girl was sitting alone. She had light brown skin and curly black hair, and was rather pretty, from what Julia could see. If this were any other day, she probably would have tried to strike up a conversation, but the last thing she wanted to do was be social.

The tardy bell rang and the class quieted, which Julia, to be honest, found surprising. She wasn't quite sure why.

A man stood up from the office chair in front of the various lab tables. He was tall with salt and pepper hair, and appeared to be in his late forties. Julia assumed he was Mr. McLennon.

"Alright. Well, y'all already know who I am, so let's just get things moving," he said with a smile. Laughter scattered around the classroom.

He pulled out a clipboard and proceeded to take attendance. "Alice is here...Caleb, I saw you...Julia? Is there a Julia here?"

Slowly Julia raised her hand. "Right here."

Mr. McLennon checked her name off of the roster...and stopped. Julia sighed under her breath. She knew he would notice sooner or later.

He looked up at her. "Are you by any chance related to-?"

"Yes," Julia answered, sighing again.

Mr. McLennon chuckled to himself. "Well, I'll be damned - excuse my language. I understand you're a transfer student this year?"

Julia nodded.

"I'm sure you'll get acquainted with the school quite quickly, then. If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask me." He chuckled again. "Although I suppose you could dust ask your mother..."

He cleared his throat and looked back at the clipboard. "Lizzie. Lizzie Clark? I thought I saw you..."

Even though things had moved on, Julia could still feel every eye in the room rested on her.

Author's Note:

I feel like I'm only updating so quickly is because I have nothing better to do yet...whoops. Anyway, here's chapter 2! This one's a little shorter, but still kind of slow. Next chapter will be up soon and hopefully moving a little faster. We get to meet a new character and things don't exactly go as planned...
