Julia looked Eva Pels up and down with dread. Out of all the things she was imagining, this was by far the worst.

Eva had been laughing when she walked into the room, but now everything was silent. Julia knew they were both thinking the exact same thing.

"So, we're roommates, I guess," Julia said as calmly as she could.

"Yeah, I know." Eva crossed her arms over her chest and glared at Julia. This was going to be a very awkward semester.

"Hey, Eva, you didn't-" A boy ran into the room, but when he saw the two girls staring each other down, he stopped. "I'm...guessing this is your roommate?"

Eva groaned. "Julia, this is Miles Victor. Miles, this is Julia Castle," she introduced.

"Hi," Julia said awkwardly.

The look on his face changed almost immediately. "This is her?" he whispered. Julia realized that Eva must have already told him about their conversation in the hallway. She stood there uncomfortably as they whispered back and forth.

Miles held out his hand. "Nice to meet you, Julia."

As she shook his hand, Julia noticed he had two different eye colors - one blue, one brown. He had glasses, too. She wondered if that was why.

"It's called heterochromia iridum," Miles said, as if he had read her mind. "And I don't really need these glasses; I can see fine without them." Julia suddenly felt embarrassed for staring.

"So, are you two dating or something...?" she asked.

Eva snorted from the other side of the room. Miles laughed to himself. "No, we've been friends since first grade. It'd be too awkward," he answered coolly. "Plus, I think Eva is still trying to figure out her sexuality."

"I am not!" Eva yelled, playfully hitting his shoulder.

It was as if they had forgotten she was there. Julia felt more awkward now than before. "Um, I saw your stuff was on the bottom bunk, so should I sleep on the top?"

Eva shrugged. "I don't care. I can sleep anywhere. Just don't make a mess. I told Miles to clean these chips up more than ten minutes ago..." she trailed off, glaring at him. "I'm kind of a neat freak."

Julia breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank God. I am too."

"Congrats, we have something in common," Eva replied sarcastically. "Don't get too attached to me, Castle. We're only roommates for this year."

She reached over the counter by the door and grabbed a vending machine-sized bag of chips. "You guys up for some Halo?" she asked, opening the bag and popping some into her mouth.

"I've never played," Julia answered sheepishly.

Miles gasped dramatically. "Sit down on the couch. Go," he ordered. "Get her a controller. We're gonna sit here until she learns to shoot."

Author's Note:

So maybe Eva isn't as intimidating as she seems. Do you think she and Julia are friends now?

This chapter is kinda short, but now we've got a new main character! We'll get to know Miles - as well as some other big characters - as the story goes on. There are a couple twists coming soon...
