Chapter Three

I stared at his open hand, debating if I was really ready to answer these types of questions, but the faster I came out with the truth, the faster they all could act normal. It took me some time, some thinking, but I had been right the whole time. I knew what my cousin was now, why Uncle Charlie was a bit apprehensive about me moving in with her. But their eyes... their eyes didn't add up. So I sighed, giving in as I allowed my hand to reach out.

"How long have you had this ability?" he began his questioning the moment my hand was in his, the other running along my arm. I shivered from the cold, swallowing thickly as I thought on how to answer.

"Few years. It took a while to realize what happened to me. I found out when I looked into a mirror and couldn't see myself."

"Can you control it?"

"Not really," I breathed. "It happens when I panic a lot and it can last for who knows how long. Longest time was three days."

"Are we talking about the three days your mom thought you ran away?" Bella asked. I nodded my head toward her before voicing a yes when I realized she couldn't see me. She looked at Edward, noticing his own confusion.

"Probably why I can't read her or why Jasper and Alice struggle with their own abilities. She has a shield like you, Bella," Edward leaned toward her. Bella gave a slow shake of her head.

"Not – not like me."

"She's right. Alessa's gift is far stronger and nearly fully developed. For it to appear as a mortal," Carlisle continued to stare at me, waiting to see if I would reappear. I sighed, muttering for him to hang on as I started to do a breathing exercise I had learn. I needed to calm down and concentrate. So squeezing my eyes shut, I waited for that odd feeling of something just dropping, trying to will myself to control it. And sure enough, several gasps told me it worked, my eyes fluttering open to look at them all.

"Dude," Emmett was the first to show his excitement. Esme gave her son a look that said "Don't" which told me he had some plans. I didn't like being invisible though, it was such a pain.

"How did this develop, Alessa? When do you think it happened?" Esme asked me, sitting beside me on the couch. I wrapped my arms around myself, hiding my face from her view as I prepared for the shock that everyone would feel. I knew they would either condemn me or accept me, either way, I was in for a hell of a ride.

"Alessa?"

"It... it happened after a vampire tried to attack me."

"A...wait, what?" Rosalie squinted at me, looking for signs of dishonesty. But I wasn't lying as I glared right into her eyes.

"I know what you guys are. Your eyes are different from the others, from the ones who thought I would be a good little snack. But everything else is the same," I accused them, turning toward Bella then. "I'm not stupid. I thought you knew that."

"I'm sorry, Ells. I mean it," Bella shoved her hands into her pockets, her head falling to the ground. "We just couldn't tell you. It's a vampire law thing."

"I get that. I just wanted you to give me more credit than what you originally gave me," I mumbled before glancing at Esme. Carlisle was sitting behind her, their hands entwining together. Again, so flipping parent like. Just so... envious.

It took me awhile to explain my story, telling them all what happened to me. How I was walking home from school and coming across a small group of people. I remembered their eyes, these bright red eyes that reminded me of burning death, and I remember complimenting them. I was a weird child so seeing anyone who acted different was something I thought was amazing.
