I've been here three days. Three, actually kind of fun days. Cy and Michel have taught me everything they knew about vampires and half bloods and their powers. Vampires have speed, mind-reading, strength, the ability to track each other or anyone in particular, and for some reason unknown, half-bloods are always stronger than full-bloods. I already knew what angels have. They have (obviously,) flying, agility, full control of one element, and one thing I have not mastered yet, a force-field. So the only thing I know now is that I might have no powers-other than flying and fangs-or I could have all of them. Either way, I was glad we were the only house on the windy road so I could practice flying... even though I was pretty sure both of them flinched whenever they saw my wings come out.
I jogged down the stairs and into the kitchen, expecting to see Cy and Michel siting at the table, drinking a red liquid out of mugs. Yes, they stole bagged blood from the Red Cross. But if you think about it, stealing is so much better than murder. But they weren't. That was weird. I just started to wonder where they were when a breeze hit me from the window with the shades drawn. Again, weird. The shades are always drawn, just in case of sunlight, so that didn't surprise me, but the window isn't ever open for the same reason. If a breeze came and blew the shades open, and the sunlight fell on Michel, well, he would die. Brutally. But since Cy was half human, he didn't burn up. And we still didn't know what would happen to me. Not thinking, I walked over to the window and pulled the blinds open.
Nothing happened. That is, nothing to me but complete and total surprise. When I looked out, Michel and Cy were standing outside. Let me repeat that. MICHEL. OUTSIDE. DAYLIGHT. Now THAT was the weird thing. I was definitely going to investigate, but before I went outside, my feet carried me to the fridge. I reached for the handle. I was hungry... No. I told myself. That could wait. This just couldn't. Releasing my grip on the handle, I walked cautiously through the hallway and out to the porch. There was a small roof overhead, still covering me with shade.
"Hey!" I called, making them both turn around. I started to walk down the stairs, the shade still covering me. "How the hell are..."
"Lela, STOP!" Michel screamed. I stopped, now fully covered in sun. Both of them sighed. Then, while Cy continued to look relieved, like a happy little brother, Michel's whole face and composure immediately turned furious. "Do you have ANY IDEA how LUCKY you just got?!" Michel screached at me. "What would have happened if your skin had changed COMPLETELY into that of a vampires? What if it had, and you hadn't been wearing protection? What would of happened? Hmmm?"
At first I was still in shock, but then I shot back, "Since WHEN did YOU become the BOSS of ME?"
His face turned red, and not because of the sun. "Since we RESCUED YOU in the woods! Technically, as soon as you agreed for us to take care of you, you became my DAUGHTER!"
His whole expression changed, and I can't exactly explain it. It looked like, in his face, one thousand emotions were going on at once. Anger, sadness, stress, confusion... I could go on forever. And then I heard it. Although neither of their lips were moving, I heard in Michel's thick accent, 'Why did I say daughter? Sure, I've only known her for a few days, but I do feel the exact same way about her I feel about Cyrus. Protective, happiness, love... all in a fatherly way. But what if she wasn't ready to hear it? She never talks about her parents, if their alive, abusive, dead, and she still won't tell us about who the girl in the woods was. Ugh, how will she react..."
And then came another voice, one that sounded like Cy's dorky teenage voice, 'What would I have done if she had died, right then? What would dad have done? Did he just call her his daughter? That would be great, if she was my sister. We sure act like brother and sister already, and she's so nice, once you get to really know her. Well, and if she likes you, too. Like a friend. Ugh, I couldn't imagine dating her. It really would be like dating my sister, ugh. But now that I know her, I couldn't imagine loosing her.."
And so they went on. Just when they started to drive me crazy, and I started to realize I was just staring at them like a lunatic, I said, "What is that?"
Cy cocked his head. "What?" 'What is she talking about?' The smaller, feint voice said.
"That!" I replied. They just stared at me. "It's like, like I can hear a voice, both of yours, actually, when your lips arn't moving. It's kind of like it's..." My head shot up from looking at my feet. "like I can hear your thoughts."
They looked over at each other, then back, and walked up to me. "Can you hear it now?" Michel asked. This time I had to strain my hearing, but oh yeah, I heard it. 'This isn't possible. If the legends are true, that means she WILL still hear my thoughts now. It also means she'll have all the powers of an angel and vampire, and one power from a werewolf and one from a demon. But that also means she'll fight on the side of good instead of evil, and that her parents were murdered..'
"How many specific details are in that legend?" I asked before I could stop myself.
Michel's eyes widened. "So, you just heard that?"
I nodded. "Every word." Then I turned to Cy. "And I wouldn't want to date you, either, for the same reason." His face turned so red it looked like a cherry.
"Come with me." Michel said, heading inside. I didn't move.
"Wait, but how could you go out in the sun?" I asked curiously. He smiled, holding up a sun screen bottle lab led 'SPF 2,500'. I couldn't help my laugh. "Since when did people start making sun screen for vampires?"
Both of them chuckled. "About one-thousand years ago." Michel answered.
"Cool." I replied before I could stop myself. Now they full on laughed, and I joined in. Then they started walking through the hall again. "Wait!" I called again.
Again, they turned around. "What?" Cy asked in a playfull tone. I rolled my eyes at him.
"Can I please get something to eat first?"
Michel shook his head. "It might work better if you're hungry."
I groaned. "So I can't eat for something unknown you're going to make me do, and just a possibility?"
"Yup." Cy said before Michel could.
I sighed. "Fine. Let's just get this over with. Whatever THIS is." I added, starting to get a little freaked out. Just a little. But they just smiled and continued to walk down the hallway. I followed.
