"You're marrying me away?"
My voice breaks and suddenly I feel uncomfortable sitting in the same room as my father. I don't think he notices instantly, because he leans back into his office seat but doesn't make a single gesture to dismiss me. As much as I wish he would, he doesn't. Instead he continues to peer across the desk, staring right into my eyes as that unfamiliar lump grows inside my throat.
Has he no mercy?
"You know what business we run, Julietta. You'll be perfectly safe in the arms of Mr. Valentino, and so my business will progressively expand." He takes a slow sip from his wine glass, a small grin toying with the edges of his lips and for a mere second I think he's joking.
He was giving me away to an unknown man I have yet to meet, a man who could potentially be as cruel and violent as they come; and he was happy with that? How could he not have some sort of bond with me, wasn't I his only little girl!?
But it all began to make sense as I read the emotions etched deep into his face. I may have been his only little girl, but I was my deceased mothers little girl also.. And so I was a reminder of his beloved, a waste of his precious time. I was imune to his hate by now, I didn't care nor did I seem to mind, until now. When he decided to marry me off to a man that will most likely never love me, let alone treat me right.
The best part? I was leaving tomorrow night.
No, he had no mercy what so ever.
