TW- Suicide, mental illness
"You know, we really should be studying," Spencer remarked in between kisses, causing Toby to chuckle. They both knew they had a huge French test coming up, but neither of them could be bothered to actually prepare for it. They were too busy kissing each other and enjoying the other's company. His tongue slipped into her mouth, causing her to moan and grip the sheets of his bed. She tugged at his shirt, mentally begging him to take it off. Just as he was about to strip it off, they were startled by the sound of his bedroom doorknob turning.
Toby groaned. He could've sworn his family would be out for more than an hour. Within a second, they got up and straightened themselves out, making an effort to look like they hadn't just made out.
Toby's mother, Marion, appeared with a concerned look on her face. "Oh, hello, Spencer. Honey, I thought you two were studying downstairs." She said as sweetly as she could. Without a doubt, Marion was utterly shocked to find Spencer Hastings in her son's room. In fact, she was utterly shocked to find out that her son was dating Spencer Hastings.
When Toby admitted to his mother that he had a girlfriend, Marion was, in all honesty, scared. She didn't want her son to get hurt. She knew her son was very sensitive. However, she did feel a little bit better when she discovered his new girlfriend to be Spencer Hastings, Rosewood High's star student. All Marion knew was that Spencer was a senior, just like Toby, and she just recently earned the title of valedictorian, and she got a spot at Harvard University. Spencer and Toby had been seeing each other for almost a year, and they were both well-acquainted with each other's families.
"Sorry, Mrs. Cavanaugh," Spencer apologized, automatically feeling guilty. All Spencer hoped was that Marion didn't see her making out with Toby. Spencer couldn't help but feel like Marion didn't like her, and it broke her heart. Spencer didn't mind if there were people at school who didn't like her. She didn't mind if her relationship with her family was rocky. But she did care if Marion Cavanaugh, the woman who raised Toby to be who he is, liked her.
"It's quite alright, you two. Toby, honey, could you drive me to my doctor's appointment?" Marion asked, quickly changing the subject.
"Of course, mom." Toby said, helping Spencer off of the bed and walking her to the door.
"How is she doing?" Spencer asked before leaving. Just a month ago, Marion Cavanaugh had been diagnosed with dementia. She remembered Toby telling her how disoriented she had been lately, and how she'd confuse the daytime from the nighttime. Toby remembered several instances leading up to his mother's diagnosis in which she forgot her son's age, the time of day, and she'd be silent for several hours.
"She's getting worse. We're trying everything we can." Toby said. Spencer felt her heart breaking for him. She couldn't imagine this happening to anyone, even her enemies. It was too awful to think about. "Well, I've got to go," Toby said, kissing Spencer's cheek.
"If you need me, just call me. I love you." Spencer said.
"I love you, too." Toby said, then watching his girlfriend get into her car and drive off.
"Who was that, honey?" Marion asked her son, extremely confused.
Toby felt as if his heart had been ripped out of his chest. She just talked to Spencer not five minutes ago. He knew she was getting worse, he just didn't want to believe it. He had to be patient with her, because any stress or arguing could put his mother in a very bad place. "That's Spencer. She's my girlfriend, mom." he said calmly.
"She's very beautiful." Marion said, noticing her son grabbing a set of car keys, "I'll drive, honey. You don't have your license yet."
This was too painful to hear. "I do have my license, mom. I've had my license for two years now. And, you can't drive."
