Don't Forget Me

She heard a blood-curdling scream, followed by the most evil laugh she had ever heard. Nothing was more terrifying than being there, in what she could only picture as much, much worse than hell. She heard the shrieks of her dearest friends, and she thought it was really, truly over.

Spencer Hastings woke up from her terrible nightmare, screaming and crying and begging for it to be over. CeCe Drake had been arrested and put into Welby, but she couldn't help but feel like someone was still there, watching her. The only sound in her entire dorm room was her breathing heavily, struggling to come back to reality. She had no roommate, thankfully. The last thing Spencer wanted was to burden another person with her problems.

The clock on her phone read "12:03 AM". Secretly, Spencer wondered if Toby Cavanaugh would be awake at this hour. Her boyfriend of two years now, Toby Cavanaugh, would probably still be awake reviewing a case, or possibly still at work. She wanted to call him, for the sake of hearing his soothing voice, but she believed that she was only a burden in his life. Spencer knew Toby would answer her call in a heartbeat, but she also knew he wouldn't feel as excited to hear that she had another nightmare. It seemed like that was all they ever talked about. She called him nearly every day, but most of the calls were about the nightmares she had, or how scared she felt without him.

Selfishly, the dialed his number and waited. There were only two rings before Toby picked up his phone.

"Hey, Spence." Toby said when he answered his phone. In an instant, Spencer felt herself begin to calm down.

"What are you doing right now?" she asked, trying to avoid the real meaning behind this call.

"Still working. Tanner put me on the night shift." he said, obviously irritated at his boss.

"Oh, well, I won't keep you-"

"Spencer? What's wrong?" Toby asked. He could hear in her voice that she wasn't okay.

Spencer was quiet. A whole minute went by, and neither of them said a word.

"I had a nightmare." she finally said, feeling as though her body was frozen. The next five seconds were the longest in her life as she waited for his response.

"Spencer, you're not in that place anymore. You're safe over there. Your friends are safe. You don't have to worry anymore, baby." he said as patiently as he could. He had said this to her probably hundreds of times.

"I know, but-" Spencer said, stopping herself. She knew what she wanted to say next, but knowing Toby, he'd take it literally. She didn't want him to get into trouble at work, or keep him up, so she decided to stop talking. But she was already in too deep.

"But what?" Toby asked. He knew Spencer. He knew that she was always afraid to tell the truth.

"But I need you." Spencer finally said. It was the raw, untainted truth. She had no reason to be dishonest with him.

It physically pained Toby to hear the sadness in his girlfriend's voice. He knew that right now, there was really nothing he could do other than listen to her talk. Now that she had graduated and moved to Washington DC, things were a lot more difficult for them. They couldn't see or hold each other like they used to- not when they were three hours away.

----

The conversation between Spencer and Toby had ended shortly after. They both felt stuck. There was truly nothing they could do. All they could do was sit on the phone and listen to each other.

Spencer couldn't sleep after her nightmare. She never really could sleep after what had happened to her. Spencer tried and tried, but she just couldn't sleep.

The glowing red light from her alarm clock was the only thing she could see in her dark dorm room.

1:58 AM.

She knew going back to sleep was no longer an option for her. So, she decided to stay up and look through old photo albums. The first page showed a picture of her and Toby. She was on his back, and they were both laughing. Reliving and remembering that day warmed Spencer's heart, and for a second, she forgot. She forgot about everything that happened to her in that hellish dollhouse.

Three photo albums later, she found one of her favorites. It had been framed and put onto her nightstand the same day it was taken. Looking at this picture gave her a sense of purpose. Something about the picture told her to keep going. It was of her and Toby on his 19th birthday, and she was kissing his cheek. They both had the biggest smiles on their faces, and all Spencer could remember was being completely and totally happy for the first time in her life.

Spencer put away the photo albums and looked at the clock once more.

3:26 AM.

It was hopeless, but Spencer decided to crawl back into her bed and try to sleep again.

She laid there for over a half hour, still unable to sleep. She grabbed her phone and texted the one and only phone number she had ever memorized from heart.

"Are you still at work?"

He had responded within three seconds.

"Nope. But I'm not home yet either."

"How come?"

"Some other things came up."

"What other things?"

"Well, let's just say that it's far more important than anything at work."

Before Spencer could type her response, there was a knock at the front door.

Spencer got up to answer the door. When she opened it, she was greeted by the beautiful blue eyes she fell in love with. The beautiful blue eyes she hadn't seen in almost a year.

Without saying anything, she buried her face into Toby's shoulder, inhaling his smell, remembering this moment, embracing him. She did everything she possibly could've done in this moment.

"Toby, what are you doing here?" She asked, suddenly feeling guilty. Toby could've been happily asleep right now, but instead, he drove three hours to Washington DC to see her.

"You said you needed me." he said, still holding onto her. He hadn't touched her in so long, it almost didnt feel real. Her skin, her hair, her eyes, it was all exactly how he remembered, except there was something about her that had changed. The last time he saw her, she was just a girl. Now, after looking at her this way, he knew that she was a woman.

"You didn't have to come all this way-"

"I know I didn't have to, but I wanted to." he said, causing a single tear to roll down Spencer's cheek. She didnt know anyone else who would've done this. Toby was crazy about her, and he would do everything humanly possible to see her happy.

"I love you." she said finally, kissing his lips for the first time in nearly a year.

"I love you, too," Toby said, pushing a lock of Spencer's hair behind her ear, "now, let's get some sleep, baby."
