My Reason To Smile

Spencer sat in silence as she watched Aria pick at her napkin. Anybody could've seen that Aria was nervous, and what irked Spencer was that Aria hadn't told her why. "Aria, what's going on? You invited me to lunch but you're not saying anything." Spencer finally said after what felt like a lifetime of silence. She hated when people stalled, especially when they needed to tell her something urgent. Aria had invited her to lunch earlier that day, saying that she needed to tell Spencer something important. The curiosity was eating at her all morning, so much that even her twin toddlers had noticed that she wasn't herself that day.

"It's just that I know that once you hear what I have to say, it might make or break our friendship." Aria admitted. Now Spencer was really starting to worry. Had her and Ezra decided to get a divorce? Was A back? Did Aria find out something she shouldnt have?

Spencer held onto Aria's hands from across the table. "Aria, whatever it is, you know you can tell me."

Aria took a deep breath. "Ezra and I have been talking about having another baby. But the adoption process was so drawn-out and expensive that we've been thinking about finding a surrogate," she paused to look at Spencer's neutral expression, "I've talked to the other girls about it. Emily can't because she's never been pregnant, and Hanna and Ali really don't want to be pregnant again-"

"Wait, Aria," Spencer cut her off, not believing her own ears, "are you asking if I can be a surrogate for you and Ezra?"

Aria nodded. Spencer sat back, letting Aria's words sink in. She wasn't opposed, in fact she would love to do this for Aria and Ezra. She wasn't sure about how Toby would feel about it, though. This wasn't something she could hide from him, but even if it was, she wouldn't want to.

"I'll have to talk to Toby about it," Spencer said. She smiled upon seeing Aria's eyes light up.

"Thank you," Aria said, smiling. Spencer could tell that this was something she really wanted. If all went according to plan, Aria and Ezra were going to have another baby. Spencer wondered if this was something Toby would be okay with. Spencer had nothing but great memories of being pregnant, and she wouldn't mind doing this for Ezra and Aria at all. That is, if it all worked out.

Spencer decided to wait until the evening to tell Toby about her and Aria's conversation. She didn't want this discussion to be put on hold because of their children; this was a discussion they needed to have without any interruptions.

"I know this may take a little convincing," Spencer started, crawling into bed with Toby, letting him wrap his arm around her, "How would you feel if I was a surrogate for Aria and Ezra?" Spencer looked up, seeing Toby's puzzled expression, "I'm their last option before they find one from their doctor, and I feel like they should be doing this with someone they know rather than a stranger," Spencer's added, trying to convince her husband.

"So, Aria and Ezra want you to have their baby? Like, you and Ezra have a baby together?" Toby asked, trying to wrap his brain around this situation.

"Oh, no," Spencer responded, "Nothing like that. Aria can produce her own eggs, she just can't carry children. I would just be carrying and giving birth to their baby. This is something they really want, Tobes."

"Is this something you want to do?" Toby asked, running his fingers through his wife's curly brown hair. He couldn't help but feel like this was another example of Spencer's 'I care too much' gene going too far.

"Only if you're okay with it." Spencer said, grabbing Toby's hand, which was busy twirling a lock of Spencer's hair.

Toby debated it for a minute. This was something she truly wanted, he could tell. He didn't doubt for a second that they'd do anything to see their friends happy. Granted, Aria and Ezra already had two adopted children of their own, but Toby was always open to the idea of a big family. He understood their desire for more children; he and Spencer had talked about having more, but they agreed that two was enough for them. It was Aria and Ezra who wanted the big family. They had talked about it nonstop after they got married. They wanted at least four children.

He looked over at Spencer, who was still holding onto his hand. He admired how caring she was with her friends, and how much joy having children brought to them. Though the last two and a half years had been filled with sleepless nights and puke-stained shirts, he loved being a parent, especially with Spencer. He knew Aria and Ezra felt the same way. Who was he to keep them from being happy?

"Let's do it." he said. Spencer smiled, leaning over to kiss him.

The paper sheets on the hospital bed were possibly the most uncomfortable thing Spencer had ever laid on, and her headache from three days prior was coming back with a vengeance. In a few minutes, she'd find out if the last two months of doctor's appointments, treatments, and headaches would be worth it. Today would be the day she'd finally learn if she was pregnant with Aria and Ezra's child.

Toby grabbed onto Spencer's hand. The whole surrogacy process was completely draining for everyone, especially Spencer. Spencer's hormones had suddenly made her overly emotional, and he had picked up an extra shift at work to help pay for this process. "Whatever happens," Toby said to her in a low voice, "I'm right here. I love you."

"I love you, too," Spencer said as Toby kissed the back of her hand. She looked over at Aria and Ezra, who both seemed to be in their own little world of romance. They were laughing, talking, smiling. She could tell that no matter what- even if she wasn't pregnant- that they would be okay, because they had each other.

Spencer thought about how ten years ago, she hadn't ever said a word to Toby, her and Aria were just starting to rekindle after Alison had gone missing, and Ezra was just their teacher. They had all grown so much and become closer than ever.

"Alright, everyone," the fertility doctor said as she came in. Everybody became tense, anticipating a response. Spencer held her breath as she waited for the doctor to confirm or deny that she was pregnant. "So, all three test results came back,"

The half-second that the nurse took to pause felt like a lifetime. It felt as though time stopped, and her heart sunk to her stomach. Spencer felt Toby squeeze her hand, the anticipation getting the best of him as well.

"And all three tests came back positive. Congratulations,"

Aria gasped, and smiles were plastered across both her and Ezra's faces. "Oh my god!" she rejoiced, hugging Ezra. Both Aria and Ezra got up to hug Spencer, making sure she wouldn't be squished.

Spencer's hand refused to let go of Toby's, because she knew he wasn't as involved in this situation as much as they both wished. How could he? It wasn't his baby, and he wasn't carrying it. But for the next nine months, he swore that he would make sure that his wife and this baby would get every luxury, and wouldn't live one second in discomfort. Neither of them deserved to go through this alone. She didn't deserve to go through this alone. She was so kind-hearted, so selfless, and so beautiful.

When Aria and Ezra let go of Spencer to talk to the fertility doctor and sign paperwork, Toby leaned over to kiss his wife. "The next nine months are going to be crazy. Even crazier than it was with the twins. Can you promise me that you'll be right here with me through everything?" She asked, interlocking their fingers. She knew he had a tendency to leave town for a few weeks at a time, whether it was for a job or if he just needed time to himself. He had started working on that after they had gotten married, though, and he had only ever left town once after the their children were born, and it was work-related. She knew he would pull through for her, though, because he wasn't just an amazing husband. He was an amazing person.

Toby smiled leaning in to kiss her one more time, "I promise. And I love you."
