TW- heavy on death and mention of suicide

The days leading up to the tragedy were hectic. Nobody expected it to happen. Absolutely nobody, especially Spencer Hastings. She'd grown up surrounded by so much grief and loss, and she couldn't imagine her mother becoming a victim. She'd lost her parents years before. Her father had suffered a heart attack and breast cancer had won the ongoing battle with her adoptive mother. It was difficult, of course. One shouldn't have to go through such a tremendous loss. She was beginning to lose hope, but then Mary came around. Spencer thought she'd lost her birth mother for good, and this was her chance to reconnect with her. This was her chance to make up for the twenty-six years they had spent apart.

Toby Cavanaugh had gone through tremendous losses himself. His mother, his wife, his father; it had seemed like he'd lost everyone he'd ever loved. All he had now was Spencer. He and Spencer had rekindled while grieving. When he had heard that Mary was involved in a car accident and was in critical condition, he made it his mission to ensure that his fiancée, Spencer, was happy.

It was on a Sunday afternoon when he got the phone call.

Spencer was in the shower and couldn't answer her phone. She heard it ring from the other room, and asked Toby to pick it up for her. Mary was dead.

All that rang through Toby's mind was how confident Spencer was that her birth mother was going to be alright. How she assured her fiancé that there was nothing to worry about. She was in denial. She didn't want to think about the harsh truth. They had become so close. It was like those twenty-six missing years had never happened. They had quickly become best friends.

Spencer emerged from the bathroom, a navy blue towel wrapped around her body. "Who was it?" She asked, coming closer to Toby.

This was the moment. Toby hated being the bearer of bad news, especially to Spencer. Seeing the light drain from her eyes and watching her full lips drift out of a smile was heart breaking. He couldn't do this to her. Not now. "Nobody," he insisted, "just some telemarketer."

Spencer dismissed it, shrugging.

"Do you want to go get some breakfast?" Toby asked. He didn't want to tell Spencer now and ruin her entire day. It was only ten in the morning. He was going to make sure she had a good day.

"Sure," Spencer said flashing a smile that made Toby's heart ache, "I'll go get ready." She kissed him once, making Toby's heart ache even more, then made her way to her closet.

She always noticed the way he looked at her. When he looked at her, she knew he was listening. She knew he genuinely cared about her and what she was saying. Even when they were young and they just started dating, she knew that look. That look made her heart jump. But today was different. Something was wrong; she could sense it. She didn't know what, but she knew something was up. He rarely looked her in the eyes, and when he did it, it was only for a brief second. She knew from experience that when he acted like this, something had happened. The last time he did this to her was when he had to tell her he had gotten fired.

He didn't like seeing her disappointed. It was like seeing a sad puppy. He avoided eye contact. Looking at her, glowing and optimistic, would cause him to fall apart.

She had been going on and on about wedding plans to keep her mind busy; when her mind wasn't busy, she'd think about the sad things. "I honestly don't think I can wait any longer," she groaned playfully, "I just want to marry you already."

Suddenly, Toby had an idea. It was crazy, he knew it. But he also knew that it would guarantee Spencer's happiness. "Let's get married. Today." Toby said seriously.
