Unbreakable (Eventual Kaneki Ken x Reader)

Chapter 14:

You had broken up with Ayato, despite how awkward it had been. Despite his continued protests that it was mutual, you could see how much it hurt him and you did you best to support him and give him space at the same time.

After a few months, Ayato had found another girl named Hinami who liked him just as much as he liked her. You were extremely happy for them, they deserved each other. You always knew he could do so much better.

"Just promise me you'll eventually tell Kaneki how you feel, alright?" Ayato had asked when the two of you had split. You had of course replied with a fake snarky, "of course" and hugged him tightly. You had also promised to keep the fake dating thing between you guys and Touka as to not upset anyone.

It was if everything had been balanced in the world, everyone was happy and you only got the occasional nightmare anymore.

All that was left was to tell Kaneki about how you really felt about him. Easier said than done. You promised yourself that the next time you saw him, you would confess.

You felt a buzz from your phone and unlocked it to see a text from your mom peering up at you.

[Message][From Mom]: Honey, how're you doing?

[Message][To Mom]: Ayato and I broke up months ago mom. Anyways, we're still friends and living together.

[Message][From Mom]: Are you alright? That sounds a bit, awkward.

[Message][To Mom]: It was months ago! Everything worked out in the end and everyone is happy

[Message][From Mom]: But are you happy?

[Message][To Mom]: Of course I am!

[Message][From Mom]: I was just making sure, it's a mom's job to worry about her child! I still want to visit though, I miss you.

[Message][To Mom]: I miss you too, but the flight is so expensive and you're getting older...

[Message][From Mom]: Are you calling me old, young lady?

[Message][To Mom]: Well I'm not calling you young... But seriously, I'll figure something out so we can meet.

[Message][From Mom]: Okay sounds good! I need to go to work, I love you!

[Message][To Mom]: Love you too.

Kaneki knocked on the door frame next to where you were leaning, causing you to squeak and trip over your feet as you spun around. "How long have you been there?" You demanded loudly.

"Long enough to accidentally learn that your mom misses you and wants to visit you?" He said, embarrassed.

You sighed but replied, "my mom is getting older and worries about me too much. Even more now that Ayato and I broke up. She's thinking about retirement but I'm not sure she has enough money to spare to fly out here and while I'm not poor, it's still a lot money to spend to see her."

Kaneki nodded at you. "That's fair. Want to ride around and talk about it more?" He asked.

"Sure." You responded casually, grabbing your jacket off the back of a chair and your wallet and keys from the kitchen table.

Kaneki drove here, in his same sleek black car as always. Fucking Kaneki, with his fucking money. You weren't really mad, but he did have a lot of money. You remembered Hide talking about Kaneki's psycho ex. Maybe she used him for his money and left him or something. You weren't really going to dwell on it.

"So, what's the issue?" Kaneki asked casually after a few minutes of driving down some roads, heading for the freeway.

You sighed, slumping back in your seat more before answering. "My mom and I haven't seen each other in a while since she is constantly moving, but she wants to visit me or wants me to visit her. Both of us are financially stable but not wealthy to the point of being able to book flights all around the world to see each other. We text, call and skype a lot but it's not the same." You explained solemnly.

"And the fact that I'm completely in love with you" You added silently in your head.

"Ah, I see. That sounds really rough for you, I'm sorry but I think I have a solution... But it seems like you're holding back from telling me something else. You don't have to tell me, but I'd like to know." He replied, taking an exit off the highway on to a deserted road headed out to the middle of nowhere.

You sat for a while in silence before deciding to say it. "Okay stop the car, this is important." You stated, hoping you sounded calmer and more put together than you felt.

Kaneki pulled over calmly and turned the keys, looking at you expectantly.

You took a deep breath and looked him straight in the eyes. "Kaneki Ken, I am completely in love with you." You stated.

He smiled and leaned towards you, using his hand on the back of your neck to guide you towards him. Kaneki kissed you and the world fell away. This comforted you and gave you the answer without speaking a word.

It was clumsy and awkward, leaning over the stick shift of the car. But leaning against his chest and feeling his warmth and heart beat, you knew it was always worth it.

A kiss like this was a beginning, a promise of much more to come.

Wow I finally updated. This story will end with an epilogue after this chapter. So sorry for rushing this story but I cannot think of a better way to end it. Thank you so much for sticking with me, guys.
