Chapter 2

The time must have, at least, been five thirty so I had around two and a half hours until I needed to leave for the masquerade homecoming dance so I took my time with the shower to shave my legs and every other part of my body and wash each inch. It was relaxing and I proceeded to sing at my loudest; half to annoy my family and half because I couldn't be judged in here. I loved singing. That didn't mean I was any good so I keep it to the shower.

"Coral, Hurry up! We're running out of time." Opal called through the door.

"I'm nearly finished. Give me two minutes." Truthfully, I had been finished ten minutes ago but I like the chance to relax in the water for a few minutes once I was done.

"It had better be two minutes." She called, clearly agitated that I was taking so long.

Once I was out of the shower, I put on a strapless bra and panties and put my dressing gown over the top and exited the bathroom where my sister was setting up different hair and makeup products on my dressing table. She had also covered up the mirror.

"Sit. I'm going to make you even more beautiful and then we'll have a big reveal." She smiled, patting the back of the chair.

I let her do her best and it was an hour later when she pronounced that everything was in position. It felt like she'd stuck the mask to my face but I didn't complain. From what I could tell, my hair was up at the back with a few loose strands at the front which she'd curled. The makeup must be minimalistic because she spent the least amount of time on it.

"Are you ready?" I nodded and she whipped the sheet off the mirror so I could see myself. My hair was perfect for a ball like this with a delicate gold hair piece keeping it together at the back of my head with strands curled round my face. The mask didn't even look like it was wrapped around my head. She had managed to hide the straps with my hair. The eye makeup was magnificent. The eyeliner was simple and so precise and the light pink eyeshadow was perfect for the outfit.

"Why have I never let you do this before?" I gasped leaning further into the mirror.

"Because you're just as good at doing it yourself." She smiled, kneeling down on the floor next to me.

"Have you seen how long it takes for me to put on eyeliner in the morning?" I laughed.

"It takes practice. Anyway, pose. I want to take a picture of you before you have the dress on. I can send it to the others and may I say, they are very excited to see their baby sister go to a dance." She commented, getting her phone out and standing back. I look over the back of the chair, pout cheekily and put a hand under my chin. I don't mind photos. I had to learn to love them as Lia went through this stage when she was about thirteen of taking photos of everything and everyone. It's probably why she's a journalist now. If you can call her job a journalist. She works at BuzzFeed in Los Angeles, mostly writing the news articles. The more hard-hitting stuff that they publish that does have a rippling effect instead of the famous quizzes that mean nothing really. She always doing the videos where they get the staff to do something stupid but she does love it. I don't think she could imagine working somewhere as serious as The Times or a similar magazine now she's worked there for a few years. She's always coming back home though because most of the time she can flip between the New York and LA offices to do her work. As long as it's in on time they don't really mind.

"I really do love it. I can't stop looking at myself." I say, turning back to the mirror.

"Put the dress and the shoes on and then you're ready." I get up and take the dress and shoes, slipping them on quickly and standing in front of the Opal where she stood gaping. I looked down at myself to see if I had ripped anything.
