Chapter 3

Opal drove away when I started walking up the steps into the old town hall. I walked into the foyer which had a sign announcing, 'Worcester Technical High School, Masquerade Homecoming Ball. 7:30-12:00pm. Welcome!'

I had been wondering why it was so quiet. I am ridiculously late.

I rush through, following the directions to the hall and found the door which entered onto a balcony that you had to go around to get to the stairs. I closed the large ornate door behind me and turned around and saw the few people that were on the balcony looking at me. I didn't want to be rude so smiled and continued on my way. I was probably the first person to enter in the last half an hour.

Mallory would be downstairs with some of her friends. She was my only really close friend but I had a few others that might recognise me. It was quite thrilling having no one know who I was.

It was the confused slash surprised faces that I saw from people as I moved around that I enjoyed the most. Many had masks with poles so they had to hold it up to their faces so I could see who they were and all the faces that were following me as I walked. I have no idea what stopped them from whatever they had been doing but they did and it was quite creepy for a person that's used to not being noticed.

I got to the top of the stairs without seeing Mallory so I stopped and looked around the ballroom to find her. The room got even quieter as I stood looking. There were a few couples dancing one of those dances that you see at balls that are really intricate but most weren't paying attention. They seemed to be looking at something behind me so I turned and looked, seeing a group of girls that were looking at me and whispering to each other.

That was when I realised they were all looking at me. I looked down at my dress thinking that there was something wrong but I saw nothing and suddenly got very self-conscious about myself but I didn't have a chance to think about that.

"Would you care for a dance, milady?" I looked down and Cameron Wright, the school's quarterback for the football team, was stood with his hand outstretched to me. His blonde hair and bright blue eyes, smirked at me as I hesitated. Why was he asking me to dance surely someone like Brianna or Alyssa should be here?

"Are you sure you want to dance with me? I don't even know how to." I asked, looking at him and then the rest of the room who had descended into whispers. One afternoon the other week the whole of the senior class had been taken out to learn how to dance properly for this dance, I however didn't attend and went to my usual lessons as I didn't think I'd be going. I felt I vibrate from the phone that I had tucked into my bra.

"It would be a pleasure to have a beautiful girl like you, accept a dance." He charmed, stepping up a couple of steps to stand at my side with his arm ready for me to take. I blushed and looked down. I knew what he thought. He thought just because I looked good, because I admit I did look a bit different to everyday in a good way. He thought just because I looked good, I'd turn into a wreck of nerves at his offer. He had another thing coming even if he was the most well-known person in our school.

"Alright, then. But be warned, I didn't even go that dance class we had. I had no intention of being here tonight. So I'd say you need to protect your toes. I'm giving you a chance to escape." I laughed, taking his arm as we walked down the stairs. I'm going to enjoy this. There's no point in panicking about everything I'm going to say or do.

"Don't worry. I can teach you." He said as we reached the bottom of the stairs. He led me down the stairs and as we were walking to the floor I spotted Mallory who stood with her mouth agape and she mouthed, 'Coral Williams?' which I nodded at but also mouthed, 'It's a secret.' She replied, 'You look stunning.' Which I smiled at.
