It was my first day on the job as a athletic trainer for the Phoenix Suns. To say I'm nervous was an understatement. I would be trailing the head trainer tonight at the game to learn the ropes. I'd be taking his job soon.
We were sitting at the end of the bench while the game was going on. My eyes were set on that 6'6 shooting guard. His form was absolutely flawless and it just captivated me whenever he shot.
This was my first up close and personal NBA game and it was amazing. There was a time out and Booker was right in front of me when the time out was called. He turns around to walk to the huddle but he stops when he sees me. His eyes scan my body quickly before he rushes over to the huddle.
I watch him closely and take in a full body exam. I couldn't lie that boy was hot. The team breaks out and my eyes scan down to his shoes. His shoe was untied. Did he realize?
The whistle was blown and he still hadn't notice his shoe. What if he looses his shoe and it causes him to twist an ankle? Before I could call out to him the game had already begun.
"Sir." I tap my leader on the shoulder. "Booker's shoe is-" I watch him go up for a shot and his shoe becomes loose. When he comes back down his ankles were expecting the support, but none was given. His ankle shifts and he falls right on it. I cringe and so does half the people in the crowd.
"He's twisted it. Get the tape ready." The trainer commands me. Booker wouldn't get up and that was never a good sign. He was holding on to his leg and I rush out to meet him.
"Relax Booker. I'm going to need you to relax." I say calmly and hold his foot in my hand. I twist it around to see if there was anything noticeable or out of the ordinary. It was starting to swell and that was never a good sign.
"Can you walk on it?" I ask him.
"I can try." I help him up and let him put some of his weight on me. He definitely towered over me. Booker put his hands around my waist and we slowly walk off the court. I could tell it was hurting him a lot.
I take him back into the locker room and he sets himself down on one of the beds.
"Lay back Booker." I say and take off his sock so I could get a better look. My trainer had left me to do this on my own. I was literally freaking out on the inside.
"You did a nasty job on it." I say and I look up at him. He was already staring back at me.
"I want to keep playing." I honestly think you could see the hearts in my eyes. It brought me joy to see him fight through the pain just so he can go play with his team. He had that burning desire to win.
"Booker you can barely walk on it."
"No I'm fine." He sits up.
"I'm sorry I can't let you. It's to swollen already. If you go back out there and run on it and will make things worse." His head drops and so does my heart.
"Don't worry it's just a little sprain. It won't take long Booker."
"Will you be helping me through it?"
"Yes. That is my job." I say.
"You can call me Devin." I nod my head and hadn't noticed I've been calling him by his last name.
"Okay Book- I mean Devin. I'm going to tape you up and let you go back out there. You need to rest this ankle so we're going to keep it propped up."
"Thank you."
"No problem."
Once I tape him up and I help him back out to the arena. I help him sit down at the end of the bench and prop his foot on another chair.
"I'm going to go get you some ice." I turn around quickly and speed walk back into the locker room to get a bag of ice.
"Hey Ms. Y/n the referee told me to bring this to you." A little kid handed me a untied Nike shoe.
"Thank you very much." I take the shoe and the ice back to Devin.
"Um I found your other shoe." I laugh lightly and so does Devin. I set the ice on his ankle gently and take a seat next to him. "Tell me if you need anything else."
"Don't worry I will." He mumbles I guess he assumed I didn't hear him. But I did. My cheeks turn red and I let a deep sigh out.
"Nailed it." I hold my fist out to fist bump my trainer. He rolls his eyes and smiles but fists bumps me back.
There's just something about that moment. Something about that 6'6 shooting guard loosing his shoe during a game. It all seemed familiar to me.

And that my friends is how Nike Cinderella came about. I thought it was clever when I thought of it and decided to flip the tale a little. The shoe was clever am I right? I'm so right lol. And I'm way to amused at myself for thinking of this.
In case anyone is confused the Nike shoe is the glass slipper that was lost and is what caused the whole mess in the first place. It's how you came to meet each other.
Damn I'm seriously giving myself bonus points for creativity.
Please Don't judge me I swear I have a life and don't give myself fake bonus points for great achievements. And I also made this and had to show it to the world
