How often does a guy have feelings for his best friends girl?
Quite often.
How often does it happen with Connor Davis?
Never.
But she was different. She always had been. I was just too late.
"Are you still there?" I see a hand wave in from of me.
I snap out of my thoughts and look at Cassie. "What?"
"You just left the planet," she sighs. "We need ground beef and bacon," she says pushing the shopping trolley.
I sigh and follow her to the meat section. "You could act like you're enjoying," Cassie casually says.
"Enjoying what? This trip to the supermarket?" I roll my eyes.
She looks at me for a minute before snorting. "Why would you? When do you ever run errands for mom? Or even ask me how my day was for that matter? I'm not one of your sluts. Just your sister," she goes off.
"Hey, watch your mouth. Don't talk like that," I tell her. "Why? It's okay when you do it but it isn't when I talk like that?"
I open my mouth to protest but keep quiet. I feel bad. I know I haven't been the best brother to her. And this is just the way we are.
"I'm sorry," I say softly. "I know I don't act like I give a shit, but I do. I promise to do a better job at it," I tell her.
"Whatever," she says softly and throws the packets of meat.
"And just because we don't talk much doesn't mean I don't know what's been up. I know you're seeing Carson and I don't approve. He's a senior Cass, what is wrong with you?"
"How did you find out?" She asks me stunned.
"Hello? Are you forgetting who I am?"
"Of course," she rolls her eyes.
"So you need to break it off with him," I tell her.
"That's not fair. How can you date juniors and sophomores? I'm not breaking up with him. I happen to like him, thank you very much," she says pushing the trolley forward.
"Sure you do. Get the cheese," I tell her.
"I'm serious Connor. I'm not breaking up with him," she says.
"We'll have to see about that," I tell her fiddling with my phone.
"Do we need anything else?" I ask her.
She looks down at the list. "We need some herbs. Can you get them? I'll wait at the counter," she says.
I nod and start walking to the spice aisle.
I need oregano, some mixed herbs, mint and chilly flakes. I grab the flakes and walk to the other side.
I see the bottles of various green colored items. Okay, I've got this. I can get the right one.
"Connor?"
I turn to my side and see Leah standing there.
Okay.
"Leah — hey?" I smile.
"Hey." She smiles.
"What are you doing here?" I ask her. I look down at her trolley and mentally slap my self.
"Stupid question, sorry."
She simply chuckles. "Need any help?"
"Yeah, actually."
