Chapter Thirteen
"AHHHHHHHH!" A loud yowl woke Skypaw up.
"It's Sorrelwhisker! She's having her kits!" A golden queen gasped, and rushed out to go tell Thornbush.
Moments later Thornbush rushed in with her apprentice and a pawful of herbs.
She started helping Sorrelwhisker immediately, giving her a stick to bite down on.
Dovetuft ushered Skypaw and Berrykit out of the nursery and the golden queen did the same with her two kits.
Lots of yowling and waiting later, Thornbush padded out of the nursery along with her apprentice and they went back to their medicine cat den.
Berrykit scrambled into the nursery while Skypaw and Dovetuft padded in after.
A small brown kit with white paws was suckling along with a solid, light gray kit.
Sorrelwhisker looked exhausted but happy.
"How are you feeling?" Dovetuft asked the queen.
"Amazing. But tired." Sorrelwhisker smiled, looking down at her kits and licking them on the head with affection.
"What are you gonna name them?" The golden queen whispered.
"Hmmm.... I'll let you guys name the gray tom." Sorrelwhisker smiled at Skypaw, Berrykit and the other queen's kits. "And I'll name the brown shecat... Nettlekit."
"Are you sure you want our kits to name yours?" The golden queen gasped.
"Of course Sunstep." Sorrelwhisker laughed.
Dovetuft nudged Berrykit. "Come on, think of something."
Skypaw felt a little bit left out when the other kits were picking names while she just sat there, but understood it. She couldn't speak. So she couldn't suggest anything.
Or could she? Skypaw had an idea.
She raced out of the nursery. She could hear Dovetuft's voice calling her back but ignored it.
Skypaw padded over to the prey pile and found a bird. She plucked a feather off of it and scurried back to the nursery.
The queens were looking at her quizzacally as she stepped up to the gray kit.
Skypaw set down the feather. She pointed at it, then the kit.
Berrykit wrinkled her nose. Sorrelwhisker tilted her head in confusion. Sunstep was urging her kits to think of something, ignoring Skypaw. Rude.
Dovetuft narrowed her eyes in thought. "I think she's trying to tell us something."
Skypaw gestured impatiently at the feather again, then waved her paw at the kit.
"Black...?" Berrykit piped up. "The feathers black? But the kit isn't black Blazekit."
Skypaw shook her head annoyed. She gestured again.
"Feather...?" Sorrelwhisker asked.
Skypaw nodded furiously. Then she pointed at the kit.
"Kit..." Dovetuft said confused.
Skypaw nodded furiously again. Then she plopped down onto her rump and lifted her two front legs.
She spread them and then slowly brought them back together.
"Put it together?" Berrykit asked, her head tilted to the side.
Skypaw grinned and nodded.
"Featherkit..." Sunstep mumbled. "That's a perfect name!"
"That's my smart Blazey." Dovetuft purred.
Skypaw had never been so happy.
