I awoke the next morning, an uneasiness sitting in my stomach. It was my dream last night. I dreamt of the future. It felt so real. Thorin was there, in eight years time. He decides, with the encouragement of Gandalf, to reclaim Erebor. But it was just a dream. Wasn't it? Shaking my meddled thoughts away I got up and headed to the bathroom to get dressed and ready for the day ahead. Perhaps I could speak with Gandalf a little more.
'This group though, the Istari, did I wish to join them? I know they are followers of the Valar. They were sent by the Valar to help and assist the people do Middle-earth against Sauron as he gathered his forces during the third age. These wizards were apparently, originally spirits of the order of the Maiar.'
There are five known Istari. They were Curuma, a Maia of Aulë, Olórin, a Maia of Manwë and Varda, Aiwendil a Maia of Yavanna, and Alatar and Pollando, both Maia of Oromë. Alatar and Pollando, also known as Ithryn Luin the "blue wizards", went into the east. In the Northwest of Middle-Earth Curumo became known as Saruman to men and Curinir to Elves, Olórin was known as Gandalf to men and Mithrandir to Elves, while Aiwendil became known as Radagast.
The Istari came to Middle-Earth around the year T.A 1000. Each wizard was assigned a colour for his clothes, white being indicative of the Chief. The two that travelled to the East were blue, hence their name Ithryn Luin, the "blue wizards". Similarly, the other wizards became known by their colours, often being referred to as "Saruman the White," "Gandalf the Grey," and "Radagast the Brown." It is not known if the colour had a special meaning concerning their rank, abilities and nature.
'Could my colour, gold, fit into their ranks? Where exactly would I be placed? At the top, in the middle, or at the bottom? I would assume gold would be at the top, what does the Valar want with me?'
These wizards were clothed in the bodies of old men, restricting their powers so that they would only assist to the peoples do Middle-Earth and not seek domination like Sauron, who was also a Maia. By inhibiting the bodies of men, they were ordered by the Valar to assist the people of Middle-Earth through persuasion and encouragement, not force or fear. Being clothed in the bodies of men they also became susceptible to all the weaknesses of a physical body, they felt hunger, pain, greed, sorrow, joy, and all other emotions and pains of men.
'Why was I not clothed in the body of an old woman? Why aren't my powers being restricted? I have been given no orders by the Valar. I am free to do as I please does this mean they already know the path that I will take? Would the Valar find a means of despising of me if I choose wrongly? I to am susceptible to all the weaknesses of a physical body but that is because I was born human. My powers were given to me.'
Despite their bodies, they remained immortal and aged only very slowly; however, they could be killed.
Few of. Middle-Earths inhabitants know who the wizards are; the Istari did not share this information. Most believed they were Elves or wise men. They attracted few questions due to their gentle nature and dislike of direct interference with other peoples affairs. In spite of their specific and unambiguous goal, the Wizards were nevertheless capable of mortal feelings.
Saruman was gifted with the highest power of the five Istari and was named the head of the White Council, a group of the Wise in opposition to Sauron.
'Tonight, at a meeting of the White Council and Istari, I will plead my case. Ask them to accept me as one of them and to teach me their ways, the ways of a wise man, a wizard, an elf and a Maia.'
"May the Valar help me in this task" I murmured.
Now dressed I headed back to the dining hall in the hopes of finding a late breakfast. Entering I discovered two more figures, whom I didn't know. The first an odd little fellow, dressed in brown and seemed to have birds droppings scattered around his attire. The second a graceful and gorgeous Elf. They were apparently here for the meeting tonight.
