Chapter 33

Louis

“What are you doing here? I stared in shock at the sight of my mother standing on my doorstep, her finger still pressed against my doorbell. I had just been about to leave, pulling the door open as she rang the bell.

“Is that any way to greet your mother?” she said, her voice stern but a smile on her face.

“Sorry- hi!” I pulled her into a hug and ushered her into my house, closing the door behind me. “But, seriously Mum, what are you doing here?”

“Harry called me.” I let out an annoyed puff of air at the mention of my best friend. Of course he would do this.

“Why?”

“Honey, he’s worried about you. He said you’ve barely left the house for two weeks, ignoring your band duties- what’s going on?”

We went into the lounge and I made her a cup of tea before answering.

“You remember that girl Ronnie? The one you met not long ago?” Mum nodded slowly, waiting to see where this was going. “Well, it turns out she wasn’t who she said she was.”

“What do you mean?”

“She was a girl hired to play Veronica. She had been lying the whole time,” I spat the words out like poison, hating having to say them all again. My mother stared at me with the widest eyes for a long time, her mouth hanging slightly open.

“Who was she really then?”

“Some girl from Ireland. I don’t know, I didn’t hang around for details.”

“You mean you haven’t spoken to her?”

“Since I found out? No.” That didn’t mean I hadn’t picked up the phone and dialled her number once or twice only to hang up immediately. The truth was, I was still furious, furious at what she had done, and angry at myself for missing her.

“Oh, honey. I’m sorry. But…what is it you are angry about, exactly? The fact she lied?” I nodded. “Louis, look at me.” I glanced up from my mug and into my mum’s eyes. “The thing with such whirlwind romances, like the one you and Ronnie-”

“-Charlie. Her name is Charlie.”

“OK, you and Charlie had, is there is no time to stop and think, to catch a breath. Perhaps she wanted to tell you, but didn’t know how to.”

“That’s not an excuse, Mum.”

“And I’m not making one. She hurt my baby, I’m not going to forgive her just yet. But, we should try and understand her. And from what I understood that day you brought her to meet us, she wasn’t lying then.”

“What?” I asked, confused.

“Louis, there’s certain things you cannot hide. Feelings, the feelings she had for you, she couldn’t hide them. When Dan asked her about her title and she got all uptight, I know you took her hand in yours. Honey, it calmed her down straight away and she couldn’t help but smile. You did that,” my mum explained.

“She freaked out because she doesn’t have a title, Mum.”

“That’s not the point I’m making. Maybe call her, even just for closure. Just make sure you’re the first one to hang up,” she said, winking at me. She took my empty tea mug from my hand and stood up, heading to the kitchen to wash them up.

“Hey, Mum?” I called a moment later.

“Hmm?”

“I’ve got to pop out for a while, will you be OK here on your own for a little bit?” she chuckled.
