It was 6:50am and some guys started to show up. They all gave off that small town vibe with their 5 o'clock shadow beards and scraggly hair. Each one wore their DX uniform differently; some left it open and were shirtless, some wore a white tee shirt under it, some tucked in their pants. No one really cared, which is actually not a bad work environment. They all sat down in the chairs and made small talk with each other while we waited for everyone to arrive. I could tell that I was an oddball out being the only female. The guys gave me looks, each with a different expression. I swear I heard one day "I hope lil girl over there is on my shift." Which is highly inappropriate considering 1) my father is their boss (which they probably didn't know yet, but still) and 2) most of them were in the mid 30s-40s. My father mentioned that he had 30 total employees including me. It was 7:05 am and my father was eager to start. There were two seats still open. "Not a great way to start off with the new boss." I thought.
My father got up in front of the group and introduced himself and gave this big spiel about himself. I was actually surprised by the amount of guys who actually seemed interested... because it was boring the hell out of me. Suddenly a door swung open and shook me out of my trance. "I'm so sorry, sir! Car broke down on the way here, so so sorry were late!" A familiar voice said. Why did I know that voice? The guys went to sit down in the two seats that were left open in the front row. Then one of them looked back, and I immediately knew that movie star charm. It was Soda Pop Curtis. The other guy looked back at the crowd and I also recognized his goofy grin; it was Steve Randle. I was sitting in the very back corner so I'm not sure they could see me. I honestly thought I would never see those guys again. So this is what it's like to live in a small town, huh?
I fell back in to my trance and started thinking again until I heard "-and that beautiful lady back there is my daughter, Adara Fitz." I suddenly popped up, almost falling out my chair, and smiled clumsily hoping no one saw that. I looked over to see Soda and Steve's face; both of them had the biggest childish grins. It was so silly, yet one of the most adorable things I've ever seen. "Adara will be working here along with all of you, she's going to be a manager, so if you need to know anything about the business plan I discussed today, please don't hesitate to ask her first." He said, though I don't think he realized that I didn't listen to a lick of what he said. Oops.
My father finalized the meeting and released everyone. Well except..... "The two young men who were tardy, please see me in my office."
I didn't even get a chance to talk to Soda and Steve before they rushed in to my fathers office. They seemed scared, but what they're going to learn is that my father is the farthest thing from a hard ass that they will ever meet. That was also the thing that worries me about this new job for him. He's not much one for discipline, but who knows, maybe this will change him.
