*The gold chain in my hand waved under the soft wind of my heated breath. It twirled aesthetically. I was just admiring my work, looking at the rich taste that pure gold gave me. The memory of where it came from made me feel even more dangerous inside. As the gold glittered between my fingers, the woman wearing this same chain in my memory haunted me.
I adverted my eyes in guilt and dropped the chain back into its compartment. The lid of the jewelry box gently closed in front of me. The regrets that I have for these unfortunate items shouldn't be with me for much longer. This is all for him, I think to myself each time I enter a new mansion with a new mission on mind.
I could hear the pouring rain just outside my window, water streaks ran down the sides of the glass as thunder roared above. Even though it was loud outside, that doesn't mean it was in here. For once I had a chance to be with myself.
The old dusty furniture inside my office glowed in grey colors as the lightning lit up the room. There was an eerie vibe running around me as I sat quietly and admired the jewelry that wasn't even mine in the first place. Years ago I would have felt guilty for stealing, months ago I felt empowered and now I feel nothing at all.
This is all for him.
My head turned over my shoulder to stare back down the hallway where the second bedroom door was opened just a crack. Lightning strike over in that area too but I heard no cry just yet. The shadowed outline of the baby's crib decorated the wall in front of me. He was still asleep for now.
I took in a breath and quickly turned back over to my work at the desk. Beside me was one of my jewelry boxes and on the other side, my journal.
Today was a Monday; a work day for everyone in America including myself. A lot has changed since I lost him but that doesn't mean that I'm not working at getting him back. I couldn't sit around anymore, it had already been more than a year. That's what his most faithful Merry Men were best at. I tried to work with them but they just were no longer at my pace, not since he was arrested.
The ink in my pen splattered a little across my journals pages. I cursed silently, trying to wipe away what was left underneath the scribbles. My breath was shaky as I read out loud today's to do list's suspect, "Monday, Julie Lecky, Wilbur Rd. lot 200."
I nod to myself, I remember her. The day before yesterday I had visited her old neighbor back in River West. That house was a clean escape even with two giant dogs locked in the backyard and security cameras on either level of the mansion. Fingers crossed Julie Lecky is just as dumb as her counter part rich neighbor.
There was an unusual sound in the front room. I shut my journal and swiveled around in my desk chair in alarm. Then there was a slam of the front door, "Honey I'm home!"
I rolled my eyes at the long and obnoxious greeting voice. I got up immediately and followed the sound of an ungraceful trip. What is it now?
After entering into the hallway I crossed the way and closed the baby's door, careful not to wake him with anymore noises.
"Would you keep it down." I hissed quietly between my teeth while walking back into the front room. There was dim lighting coming the complexes outside hall as the front door swung back open again. "And I told you to stop saying that every time you come back here. It's just... creepy."
