Lily's POV

My legs were shaking. I had no idea why I did this. But I had no other choice, right? I mean Chris wouldn't tell me what the hell was going on and I can't just stay in the dark forever. I need to know what's going on in the life of the person I'm so deeply in love with, even if it means I have to do something as disgusting as this. I feel like I'm betraying Chris, but I can't help but feel that Sarah and whatever she has to say can help me get over it.

"Lily?" Her voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

"Oh, hi Sarah. Please sit." I gestured her to take the seat opposite of mine.

"Are you okay Lily? You seem...off." I could see the worry in her eyes. 'Wow this girl really is nice, but it doesn't change the fact that she's marrying my boyfriend.'

"I need to know about this marriage Sarah." I didn't wanna go through any foreplay, I just needed to get this over with as soon as possible. Just like ripping off a band aid real quick, or  something a little less cliche as a metaphor.

"Oh." She dropped her head. Before she could answer me properly the waitress came to take our orders, two glasses of water for both of us.

"So?" I asked after the waitress left.

"Why don't you ask Chris? Actually don't answer. I know it's because he won't tell you."

"Exactly, but you will right? Sarah I can't stand this. Please I need to know..."

"No you don't." She cut me off. She sounded irritated for some reason that of course I didn't know about. 'It seems like I really don't know anything around here.'

"Yes I do Sarah. My boyfriend's marrying someone, don't you think I deserve an explanation?"

"You knew from the beginning that this was something that we can't tell you. I was to marry him before you even showed up. You accepted this."

"No I didn't..." She cut me off again.

"Then if you have a problem with all of this, I suggest ending it with Chris, because if this marriage doesn't work out, something more unpleasant will come into your life. Trust me." The nice girl I knew wasn't there anymore. In fact she looked more like an impatient victim trying to get away from whatever it was that made her impatient. "Lily, this is a nightmare for Chris and I too. What you need to know is that this marriage is just a escape goat, not just for us, but for all the family. It's a gesture with a hidden message in it for a specific person to see. Just trust us Lily. We've been working on this for the past 3 years." At this point her tears started to fall. "I'm begging of you Lily, I'll even kneel in front of you if you want. Just please trust us and don't question anything. The more you question all of this, the more skeptical you're gonna make Chris. I can't even imagine what would happen if he backs out on me. Please Lily. Please."

I was dumbfounded. I wanted to say something but nothing came to mind. The only thing I knew at that moment was that the sincerity in her voice was undeniable.

"Fine." I finally found it in me to talk. "Just answer me one thing." She nodded her head. "Are there any...feelings involved in this marriage?" I felt a lump starting to form in my throat, scared of the answer I was gonna get.
