Percy chose that moment to wake up. I felt as if my heart was tearing a part to hear his groaning in pain from the acid water. Polybetes grinned evilly:" Chain him to the whipping post!" A dozen guard dracaenas slithered out from the dark. Instead of cutting off the chains, they dragged Percy until the chains broke( and by then, both of his wrists and ankles were broken) I felt another tug on my heart as I watched him scream.  Then, Polybetes snapped his fingers and our chains turned into handcuffs. The dracaenas pointed their spears at our backs, and I felt a sharp poke. We shuffled forward in the darkness.

After what seemed like a lifetime, we reached a cavern. It had nothing in it but a huge pillar, with metal rings. The dracaena latched Percy to the pillar, then stepped back. I knew what was going to happen next. I've read the hunger games and knew a whipping is one of the most painful things ever. Jumping forward, I yelled up to Polybetes:" You can't do this! You cruel, cold hearted monster! Our parents will avenge us! Don't you dare harm-" and suddenly Polybetes slammed a huge spear shaft into my chest. It sent me flying through the air, and I felt my legs creak and my foot crack as I hit the wall with my feet. Feeling dazed, I couldn't get up. I could barely open my eyes. Then, with a thunderous bellow, Polybetes put his face close to mine: " for that ridiculous insult, you gave Percy Jackson 100 more lashes! Now get back to your place." Pain shot up my legs as I scrambled back on my hands. I turned my eyes to Percy again, who was getting his first lash.

A whip that had glass shards and chimera snake tail teeth on it materialized in Polybetes hands:" Don't worry, puny humans. He will live. But I'm so very sorry to say that he will endure every ounce of pain he have." I couldn't help it. I started to cry. Sobbing, I sank to the floor. Sadie hobbled over to me and patted my back as best she could with her hands tied. Carter looked at a loss for words, but he whispered:" Be protected from pain." A pale blue glyph glowed next to Percy, but quickly disappeared.

Polybetes lashed out with the whip. The shards and the teeth sank deep into Percy's muscular back, which was exposed to us. I saw that Percy was trying to contain his pain by gnashing his teeth and kicking his foot against the stone pillar, but still he didn't manage to contain the cry. Polybetes looked displeased. Sniffing the air, he yelled:" Cartee Kane, you have meddled with my plan with your insignificant spells. For that, you will get a whipping after this!" Carter paled visibly, and Sadie's hand flew to her mouth. She started to blink her eyes furiously, but was still not able to contain a low cry of despair. "I'm sorry, Sadie, Carter. I shouldn't have brought you into this. Our mess. It was all my fault..." I trailed on. Carter looked at me, and he managed a weak smile:" We would have more trouble if we don't find you anyway. We are a magnet for trouble. It's better, I think, to die with friends." "Don't say that, Carter!" Sadie cried," your not allowed to die. Or I'll have Anubis drag you out of the underworld!" We cried together, as Percy's screams filled the night.
