Savage_
I calmly pace my bedroom floor, calling Adrian back because I missed his call. I know we're suppose to meet today and I've been trying to get the shed door open since this morning. I can't seem to get in it. I need to find my father's tool box, use the drill to take the knob off the door. Adrian doesn't answer his phone, so I hang up and send a text message instead.
When done, I put my phone back in my pocket and travel to my parent's room. I search under the bed, finding my father's tool box. I open it, revealing the drill and the bits that's go with it. I retrieve the the phillip screw bit, taking the drill with me downstairs.
I approach the shed door, plugging the drill in the socket that sits over the counter. I push the button, the drill unscrewing the nails out the knob. Once both the nails are out, I remove the knob in the front pushing the other inside the door. I open the shed, groaning as the bell rings.
"I'll get it." My mother says, coming from out the backyard. I watched as she took off her gardening gloves, making her way to the door. I put my attention back at the door as I open the shed and turn the light on. Nothing had changed to my accusations, everything is still in tact. Maybe I'm just tripping.
I walk over to the stacked boxes, taking one that had my father's books and papers. I leave out the shed and sit the box on the counter as I grab my ringing phone out my pocket. It's Adrian returning my call so I answer it.
"Hello?"
"Yea. I just got off work. Um meet me out Manhattan in about an hour. I'll text you the address to the apartment building."
"Ok. No problem. I'll see you there." I hang up and put my phone in my pocket, making my way to the door. I see my mother talking to Ms. Stocks in the living room as I excuse myself. I exit the house, popping the trunk of my car and put the box inside. I close it and lock it back. When done, I travel inside the house and move out the way of the door.
"He's strange chile I'm telling you. And Sa'Eed tried to warn me about him Sadie. Y'all need to watch out for him." Ms. Stocks warns.
"Ok. We will thank you." My mother says, walking her out the door. I sit on the steps watching my mom close and lock the door back.
"That woman is losing her mind." My mom chuckles, sitting next to me on the step.
"What did she say?" I question.
"Something about she heard noises when we weren't here a couple weeks ago and that she saw Avant leave our house one night while we were sleeping. I don't know. That woman is always watching something, I guess that's why she's the block captain." My mother says.
"Why every time someone says something about Avant, you take up for him?" I question. My mother furrows her eyebrows, laughing a little.
"I do not take up for him." She scoffs.
"Yes you do." I inform.
"No I don't Savage."
"Mama yes you do." I tell her standing to my feet. My mother gives me a look of confusion. I sigh heavily, licking my lips as I look down at my hands.
"How do I take up for him Savage?" She questions in disbelief.
"Anytime somebody tells you something about Avant, you act as if he can't do no harm. Like he's this nice guy that lost his parents and just likes helping people, but he's not. Daddy tried to warn you plenty of time about him, and you took up for Avant each time. Oh he's just being a gentlemen, or oh he's just saying hi or he just needs guidance. That man has been lusting after you, since he was of age to be with you which was twenty years of age. And honestly I think he killed daddy." I admit. My mother stands to her feet, squinting her eyes.
