"Sunny days wouldn't be special, if it wasn't for rain.
Joy wouldn't feel so good, if it wasn't for pain.
Death gotta be easy, 'cause life is hard.
It'll leave you physically, mentally, and emotionally scarred." ~50 Cent- Many Men
I watch my father's casket lower in silent sobs. I know in reality, the child is suppose to burry their parents and not the other way around. Although, I would rather him burry me because I can't take this. It's too heavy on my heart. I hold on tight to the flag that was once laid over the casket. The military cadets that worked in his branch gave it to me after a neat fold. They said my father wanted me to have it. At least thats what he told them before the disease paralyzed his body.
We buried him under the tree which was his dying wish. It cost a pretty penny, but this is what he wanted. He loved sitting under a tree while reading a book, or some times just loved to chill in his hammock and sleep under the shade. He didn't bother anybody and was very calm and laid back, that's where I got it from.
"Savage." A familiar voice calls. I turn around to my Aunt Erika, hugging her as she hugs me back tightly. She's my father's oldest sister. Him and her were the only two that grandma and grandpa had. When they both past from pneumonia, Aunt Erika had raised my father until he became an adult. She was twenty-one when they passed away, my father was sixteen.
"How are you holding up." She questions, rubbing my back. We pull back and I sniff, lifting my shades to wipe my leaking eyes with a tissue. I look into her weary eyes, shaking my head.
"I could be better." I shrug. She nods, rubbing up and down my arm on the opposite side.
"I know you and your father were really close. I remember when you were first born he couldn't stop talking about you. He was ready to bring you home as soon as your mother gave birth." Aunt Erika laughs. I give her a small smile, drawing my attention to my mother who showed little emotion. Not one tear left her eyes today, strange that woman I tell you.
"Strange that mother of yours. I never liked her." Aunt Erika blurts out. I put my attention on her, my eyebrows knitted together. She laughs which causes me to laugh as well. It's been a week since that emotion escaped from within me.
"Aunt Erika." I call in shock.
"I'm serious. When your father introduced her, back when we lived in the Harlem projects of course. I had a funny feeling about her. I still do. Look at her, smiling and shit. Who thanks people happily for coming to a funeral. It's suspicious." She says. I turn back to the scene beside me, watching people swarm to the limousine where my mother stood. Most of them gentleman who use to work with my father, probably plotting. My father has only been dead a week and his supposed friends are already drooling over my mother. She's loving the attention as well.
"Well I would stay for the repass, but I need to get back home to Philly. It's 5:30 and I know my greedy ass sons gone be looking for a home cooked meal when they get home from work." We both laugh, giving one another a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I watch as she gets in her car, cranking it. I begin my travel to the car, stopping when I hear Aunt Erika call me. I turn to her, as she waves.
"Happy Early Brithday Savage! I probably won't be up at midnight. You know my old ass be to bed at ten." I laugh shaking my head.
"Thanks Auntie!" I wave as she pulls off, honking the horn. Sadly I'll be celebrating my birthday and anniversary alone. Eric had took Arnez to Florida for two weeks. He apologized for forgetting our anniversary, but honestly I didn't even care. His son is way more important, he needs that connection with his father. You only get one.
