Cass' POV
I was currently arguing with Dad. It told him the whole story and he just about flipped out at the end. I was trying to convince him that I could go save Sollux but he wasn't letting me. He didn't want to lose me again and honestly, I felt the same way. But I couldn't just do nothing and besides, I knew the Human Continent better than he did. I had already listed a few places where Sol might have been taken. I was actually winning the argument and eventually convinced him to let me go. I packed everything I came with, including my pocketknife. I said goodbye and headed out. It was almost midnight, but the moon was full so the path to the river was illuminated by moonlight. I reached it quickly and there was a guy standing there. He had brown hair with a lighter streak in it. He had a black sweater and blue striped scarf on along with blue and black striped pants. He wore aqua and violet converses and hipster glasses. His face looked awfully familiar though.... "Eridan?" I asked him and he whirled around to face me. Yup. It was him. "How? What? You-" I stuttered and he smiled sheepishly. "The magic you havve in your necklace is surprisinly easy to duplicate." He said and held up a ring with the Aquarius symbol on it. I nodded. "What do you even need it for?" I asked and he stared at me. "You're not searchin the Human Continent alone! It's suicide! I'm comin wwith you." He answered. "Buddy I lived on that continent for nine years. I think I'll be fine but by all means, come if you want to." I said sarcastically. I unclipped the necklace and slipped into the water. Eridan joined me. "The boat was going that way we need to follow its direction." I said and started to power forward. I moved a lot faster than I made an effort, which was really nice. "At this rate we'll reach the continent by morning!" I exclaimed and kept swimming. It was really weird, like I was weightless in outer space. But I was underwater. It was weird. Most of the trip was silent, except our awkward attempts at conversation. The water above us started getting brighter and I swam up to the surface. I saw a long stretch of land in front of us and my spirits leapt up. I went faster than I ever have before and I saw the docks. The docks. The ones I grew up playing on. The ones where all of this started. I scanned the boats and found the one from last night. Sollux was here, I could feel it. I motioned for Eridan to follow me to a secluded spot and we hopped out of the water. We changed into out human forms and he shuddered. "Howw do you stand that?" He asked and stood up. "It's better with the other one." I said sarcastically and he went a little purple to the face. I rolled my eyes and started to make my way around the docks. Nobody said anything to us. To them we were just normal teenagers wandering around town, not mythical-creatures-in-disguise-on-a-rescue-mission. I had a few ideas of where those men had taken Sollux, but some were worse than others. This is what they were:
1. He was in a zoo. A goddamn zoo.
2. He was being sold off to some rich douchebag.
3. I really did not like this one, but he was being taken to the one place people feared most. The notorious mansion of Andrew Hussie.
No one really knows who he is or where he came from. He was always just kind of....there. I don't know but he creeped me the hell out. People have tried to sneak into his mansion and no one ever saw them again. Some say he killed them off. Some say he banished them to another dimension. But I knew there was a fair chance Sollux would not be there. Hussie didn't really have a thing with anything from the Mythical side of the world as far as I knew. But there was always a chance that I was wrong. I decided to follow my gut and just trust that I knew where he was. "Are you sure you knoww wwhere you're goin?" Eridan asked as I turned corners at random. "Nope. I'm just following my guy right now." I answered and he gave me the weirdest look. "What?" I asked him and he went a little purple. "I just wwasn't expectin you to say that." He answered and I rolled my eyes. I turned another corner and began to hear shouting. It was more like cheering. Someone was cheering someone else on. "Oh this is bad." I said and broke into a run. Eridan followed the best he could, seeing as he was not used to running. I made sure I didn't lose him, because even though we were not on the best of terms I didn't want him getting lost all alone here. The cheering got louder and we soon came up behind a large crowd. It was clear that almost everyone there was drunk, so it was easy to push past them to see what they were all staring at. Eridan held onto the end of my shirt and you didn't stop him. He was probably barely holding back a panic attack with all of these people surrounding him. When you got to the inside of the crowd your jaw dropped in horror. There was an extremely drunk guy swinging a pocketknife and broken bottle at Sollux. He was clearly not trying to hurt the guy, but the guy was relentlessly attacking him with the crowd cheering him on. Red hot anger boiled up inside of me and I started to take a step forward. Eridan quickly grabbed my arm and turned me to face him. "Wwhat are you doin?" He whisper shouted at me. "I'm going to get him out of there." I replied and flicked out the blade of my own pocketknife. He glanced uneasily at the knife and then looked back at me. "Evven if you get him out of here howw are you goin to get past all of these people?" He asked and I stopped. He was completely right. If he hadn't stopped me all three of us would probably be dead right now. I was starting to think maybe bringing him along wasn't such a bad idea. "You're right. We need a distraction." I said and looked around. I exited the crowd and looked around the walls. I grinned when I saw a box of fireworks labeled 'Grand Finale' with a ♠️ next to it. "There's our distraction. I'll set it up and when I give the signal you light it. Then when they're all looking and/or panicking I'll grab Sol and we gtfo of here." I said told him. "But howw are wwe goin to get him back to the other continent?" He asked me and I had to stop and think about that. I forgot about that part. "Do you have any more rings on you?" I asked and he nodded, seeing where I was going with this. He handed me a solid gold one and I slipped it into my pocket. We began to set up our distraction. We placed the fireworks so that they wouldn't burn down any of the surrounding buildings and set the fuses to go off at the same time. I showed Eridan how to light it and told him to wait for the signal. I went into the crowd and back to where we were before. I then screamed "NOW!" As loud as I could and lots of people turned to stare at me. Their attention was soon diverted to the fireworks that were suddenly going off everywhere. I darted forwards and grabbed Sol by he arm. He had just been knocked out, so I slipped the ring over his finger and put his arm over my shoulder. He looked very similar to me, which was sort of comforting. I thought he'd look totally different from me but we almost looked the same in terms of colors and features. When Eridan saw us coming he grabbed Sol's other arm and we started walking away from our little show. I started to hear sirens back from where we came by the time we reached the docks. "Ok let's find a way out of here..." I muttered. I didn't see any boats that would be of much use to get us to the other side of the planet. Someone tapped me on the shoulder from behind and I jumped a little. "Need some help?" Came a very familiar voice. I turned around to see all eight of my friends standing behind me. "How..." I started. "I don't know how they did it either." John said and pointed to Dirk and the Harley-Englishes. Those three were epic at building robots and stuff like that, and Jade was a freaking nuclear physicist. "We made a boat out of the metal left on the beach from the wreck. Don't ask me how Jade figured out how to power it." Dirk said and raised his hands up in defense. "Does it still work?" I asked and looked at a fair sized metal boat that ominously glowed with a faint green light. "Of course it does! What do you take us for?" Jade said and smiled. I smiled back, but I could see sadness in her eyes. I saw it in all of them. Now that I had my brother back, that meant I was leaving, probably for good this time. "I'm guessing you guys should be going." She said as tears welled up in her eyes. "Take him to the boat, I need a minute." I said to Eridan and he nodded. "Yeah, and probably for good this time." I answered, my vision clouding up from tears. Without warning Jade threw her arms around me, tears falling like a waterfall. She was soon joined by the others, in equal states of emotion. "I'm going to miss all of you. You took care of me for the past nine years, and I couldn't ask for a better family." I half sobbed half cried. We didn't say anything for I don't know how long. When they finally let go I started to walk to the boat, face red and soaking wet. "Hey Cass!" John called from behind and I turned around. "Don't forget us." He said and managed a smile. "D-don't worry. I won't." I replied and hopped in. I started the engine and soon we were speeding off away from them. Once the land was out of sight I let everything out. Heavy sobs shook my body and my eyes sting from crying for so long. They were the only family I'd had for the past nine years and now I probably wasn't ever going to see them again. Eridan did his best to comfort me, and I let him. After I had calmed down enough to be able to talk we began to see another stretch of land. I stopped the boat and tied it to the nearest tree. Eridan an I carried Sollux out of the boat and set him on the sand. I removed the ring and he changed back to his original form. Since he was still unconscious I sat down on the sand with my head on my knees. I heard Eridan sit down next to me. He took off his ring and he changed back into a mer. I didn't want to take off my necklace. As far as I was concerned, I never wanted to change back. I wanted to stay a human, stay part of the family I had just lost. But then there was my other family, my real family. I wanted to be with them, to live the life I was taken from all those years ago. A brutal war went on inside my head. Which family do I belong to? Which family do I want to belong to? Which family do I need to belong to? Tears were beginning to up again when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up at Eridan, and he looked like he had something to say. "Take it off." He said. I knew what he meant. I hesitated for a moment, and then took off my necklace. The wrongness of the change temporarily took my mind off my identity battle, but not for long. "Look at me." He said and I did. His face was completely serious, and for some odd reason it helped me calm down again. He leaned forward and pressed his lips against mine, this time full of sympathy instead of pride. When he let go I felt it. My horns split in two, my fins disappear, my gills close, and my fangs return. I stared at him with a mix of emotions across my face, but he just said "You knoww you can belong to both." And dove into the water. How did he know? I thought as I sat up. I replayed his words in my head over and over until Sollux and I reached home. He was conscious now, but he had a few bad bruises and cuts. While dad and Mituna fussed over him I went straight to my room. You can belong to both... I thought over and over. You know what? Eridan's right. Half of me has been a Captor all my life, and so has my family. But the other half has been human, along with the other half. I don't have to choose one. I'll always belong in both. Always.
