"If you fear nothing, then you are not brave. You are merely too foolish to be afraid." I was extremely afraid. I felt my heart hammer in my heart. The dense canopy provided by the trees made the forest darker. The silence was deafening. At this moment even the cricket chirping would have provided me some kind of comfort. My heartbeat and the heavy sighs echoed all over the forest. The cold atmosphere sent chills over my body.
"Just ten more minutes and I will be home." I kept telling myself.
The closer I got to home the faster my pace got. I could not die. Not tonight anyway. I was as silent as a cat. My body and my reflexes were alert. My eyes and ears as sharp as my human body allowed. My leg stopped walking as soon as I heard the dead leaves crumble beneath something. I could hear a low growl. What the fuck? I could feel my body shaking as panic settled in. This part of the forest was safe. No wild animals were ever seen along these trails. The last time anyone saw an animal was a rabbit about a year ago.
"What if it's not an animal?" My subconscious snarled.
The possibility hit me harder than the giant truck loaded with trash and at the moment I wished it was a wild boar. If it truly was the devil I would never outnumber it. shit!shit! shit! The morbid images of my blood getting sucked out of my body flashed in my eyes. Hadn't I just figured out the way to kill the vampire? If I were to die after being this close to my mission, I would officially consider myself as the biggest failure in history that is if I were to live even for a minor consideration. My mind started remembering every fight tactic I had read in books. Yes! I was actually relying upon memorized fight moves to save myself from the world's most dangerous predator.
"Or you could use camouflage." My inner voice suggested me but would it even work? Vampires' can smell you. They have the strongest senses in the living kingdom. The idea of disguise seemed stupid.
"If it's stupid but it works than it's not stupid." My subconscious barked and I hurried behind this giant bush to hide. I was rubbing the leaves in my body hoping it would hide the smell enough for the disguise and praying it wasn't poison ivy.
I always wondered what sounds vampires made. I knew for a fact that they used two hands and feet for locomotion just like humans. They had black majestic wings. No one knew what they looked like. My only source was my imagination and teen-fiction. I doubt the fiction books were reliable since they always portray the monster as insanely beautiful. I bet they looked ugly with huge fangs and hollow eyes. The growl was getting louder and more distinct. I could feel my heart sink into the pit of my stomach. I had no idea why I was peeping through the bush but I was surprised. There was no vampire or boar but a large dog. A wolf! I had to force myself not to go into hysterics or have a nervous laughing fit. I could see the giant dog sniffing my scent but it looked confused. Perhaps the camouflage had worked. I could see the wolf turn and slowly walk into the opposite direction when my stomach decided to make the largest possible noise known to mankind. The times my mother told me not to skip meals flashed in front of my eyes. My hungry stomach betrayed me. TRAITOR! The wolf slowly eyed me growling. I bet its hungry stomach was singing hallelujah! I saw saliva dripping from the corner of its mouth. Did wolf get Rabies? The amount of saliva it was dripping sure made it seem like a rabid dog.
There was no use in hiding anymore. "Fuck this shit, I am out!" with that I ran like a cheetah. If I made out of this alive I was going to pursue my career in marathon racing. I could feel the adrenaline pumping and the growl getting louder. I suddenly felt a jabbed force in my back throwing me few feet way. The pain surged through my body as I crashed into the ragged surface of the forest. I lay in the forest floor crawling with all my might as the wolf slowly made its way towards me. I was going to die! I felt tears pool in my eyes, I felt disappointment. If I died tonight, so will Nana! I had let her down. The thought of Nana dying burned my veins in anger.
"Not tonight bitch!" with that I grab the long, sharp twig lying in the ground into the wolf's eye. It howled in pain and stumbled back a little. Seeing this as my only chance I jabbed the twig straight into its skull. It let out a long howl. A howl of death. I kept on stabbing till I could hear the wolfs faint whimpers. The wolf lied lifeless on the ground. I felt a pang of guilt hit me but I had to do what I had to do. I lay motionless on the ground. Had I really just killed a wild wolf? I looked at the weapon in my hand. It was just a twig but the the precision with the way it was carved could only be made by a human. I internally thanked to whoever had left this weapon on the ground.
I slowly got into my feet. I had to get out of here as soon as I could. One predator was enough for a night. A vampire on my tail would be too much. As I slowly made my way home, I heard faint footsteps. I could see a human shadow leaning on a tree at the other end of the forest. As I stared at the shadow it quickly disappeared. Was it just my imagination? I was sure it was someone. What would a human do int the woods at this hour? Perhaps I just had a little too much of crazy for a day.
I was outside my doorsteps and for a moment I wished I was eaten by the wolf. Anything was better than my mother's Wrath. I knocked on the door letting out a deep sigh. Suddenly I could hear the other side of the door click. My mother stood there tears streamed down her eyes. I saw relief in her eyes which was quickly replaced by horror. I looked down only to find myself covered in dirt and blood. Lots and lots of blood.
"Dinner." I let out a sweet smile and walk through the door.
