Cy closed the cab door and thanked the driver, then walked up the stone stairs to her house. She jangled her keys trying to find the right one and was about to unlock the door but it pulled open revealing her father.
"Hey Cy." Thomas smiled and looked at Nick and Jen. "And Hello, Nick and Jen. Come in." He moved out of the way making room for the three friends to enter.
"I got the call, sweet pea." Thomas closed the door while side hugging Cy. Nick and Jen stood in the small hallway that opened to the Kitchen and living room. "Are you all right? I heard that you hit your head?" He cupped Cy's check and looked at her with concern.
"What? Dad I'm fine. I just had a really bad headache and Jen and Nick helped me." She turned to Nick and Jen, letting her father's hand fall away.
"They did?" Thomas looked at them with a curious gaze. Cy turned back to look at her father and his facial expression flipped to a kind, warming smile that didn't exactly hit his eyes.
"Yeah, they did," she said. "I'm much better now. Jen just helped me get to the bathroom. And Nick gave me this herbal stuff. I feel so much better."
Nick and Jen took a step back in unison as they exchanged glances.
"But it's fine. The nurse had us all go home." Cy gave a small smile.
Thomas looked taken back. "Cyrene, what herbal stuff?"
Cy played with strand of her hair. "Um... Charm?"
"Charm!? What? I got a call that you slipped in the bathroom. Wha-what was Nick–" Thomas stammered, as he cut his gaze from Cy he glued it on Nick and Jen–mostly at Nick. "What were you doing with Charm, and what where you doing giving to my daughter?!"
Nick stammered over his words but Cy cut in.
"Dad? What are you talking about?" she argued, "Why are you so mad? What. What has Charm got to do with making you angry? It helped me."
Cy saw her father's expression change–from a sweet warm smile to a frustrated, angry look in the matter of seconds. "Dad?"
"Ugh!" Thomas rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Did you say 'headache'?" he asked, barely any emotion was heard in his voice.
Cy nodded.
"Did your eyes sting? And did you feel hot at all?" he looked at her. A dark worried expression filled his eyes.
"Yes, but I also felt cold too." Cy shook her head, not knowing what was going on. "What does that have to do with anything?"
Thomas groaned and rubbed his temples in frustration. "Cy never mind, just go to your room. I'll fix up dinner." He groaned again and gestured for her to go to her bedroom.
"Dad?" Cy looked at him confused.
Thomas walked over into the dimmed living room and slumped onto the couch, hunched over.
It has been years since Cy has been sent to her room, and being sent to bed early, it was only 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon. Cy turned to look at Nick and Jen, looking at them expecting some kind of explanation, but instead they turned away from each other. Cy stomped to her room and closed the door almost slamming it.
"Why did you give her Charm?" Thomas asked through his hands to specifically to Nick. "You know that stuff has consequences. And especially it being so close to winter. I didn't want this yet." He dropped his hands and slapped his knees as he scoffed. "It's okay, it's okay, she'll be alright." He groaned as he got up from the three seated chestnut, brown couch and looked at Nick and Jen. "I hope."
"I'm sorry but I couldn't stand looking at Cy like that." Jen began, "So I asked Nick to bring it: it was in my locker." Jen said trying to stand up for Nick, to not bring everything on him. "It was my fault."
"No, Jen it's fine," Thomas said, "Thank you though–for helping her." Thomas set his hands on Jen's shoulder and gave her a gentle shake. "I promise it's okay, I'm going to let her rest for a bit." He stalked over to the kitchen reaching for low cabinet with pots and pans. "Do you guys want anything?" He placed a pan on the stove and turned it on.
"If you don't mind, Mr. Crossveck." Jen said walking into the yellow kitchen, pulling up a chair.
"Sure." Nick said about to take a step forward but stopped. "Uh, I'll be there in a minute, I'm just gon'na..." He gestured to dark hallway, giving a weak smile.
Thomas and Jen exchanged a glance then looked back at Nick. "Go," Jen said with a playful smirk.
Nick slightly nodded and walked down the dark hallway to Cy's room, which was the second door on the left and placed his head to the wood. He softy knocked. "Cy? Can I come in?" He whispered, waiting to hear some noise to indicate that she was there.
There was a rustle of blankets moving and a pair of feet shuffling across a wooden floor, toward the door. Then a slight click as the doorknob turned and the door opened up a sliver, Nick saw a dash of blood red hair twirl back around. He pushed the door open more and stepped into the dark room, turning around shutting the door. He looked back to Cy, she was facing the blue dimmed wall from the moon shining in from the window. She was fixing her blanket over her side, resting her arm over it. Nick sighed and strode to her bed and placed a knee on the edge, pushing himself up, leaning over her.
"Cy, are you okay?" Nick asked nervously, and cautious, and placed a hand on Cy's shoulder. "Hey, it's alright it wasn't a big deal, your dad says it's–"
Cy turned over pushing off Nick's hand, and showed her damped face. "It wasn't a big deal, or a bad thing. All you two did was helped me. Nick, what was my dad even thinking? Why did it seem like the world's worst crime to him?" Cy asked, looking at Nick seriously. "Charm I mean?"
Nick looked at her, smiling, seeing the way the moonlight from the window seem to sharpen her features; the way the moonlight changed her hair color a brighter red with stars of blue light from the moon streaked in her hair; the way some of her freckles looked lighter and glowed slightly; the light exposed the curves in her face; and the way the light made her look like an angel. Her eyes were glossy from her tears, and the light made her eyes look more alive.
"He is just worried it would hurt you. You never had it before so he just wanted to make sure it didn't give you a bad reaction," he tried, hoping Cy would understand.
She turned herself more on her back so she could face and talk to Nick better. "But I don't get why he is acting like this now. I feel like reality has taken a turn, but I guess so does everything in time." She turned her head to the ceiling, and rested her hands on her stomach.
"Things are more complicated than they seem Cyrene, all you have to do is see it in a different perspective," he leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Just have to know the difference. Then it's all in the matter of believing what you want to be truth and real. Trust me you may not see it now but when you do, you may or may not like what you find."
He gently brushed his fingers to her cheek and licked his lips, and his gaze lingered on her mouth setting his gaze on her plush red lips and Nick felt his heart beat faster.
Cy noticed his stare and could see his heartbeat in his neck. Nick looked back to Cy's eyes and backed away, turning his face the other direction. He shook his head and walked out of the room.
