Nick sat on the park bench waiting out in the dark–checking his phone frequently–nervous. His phone dinged and he staggered out his phone looking at the screen.
Meet me in the park. Hope you're there, 'cause I got her. Be there in a few.
Nick shot up from the bench and focused his gazed through the darkness of night, looking for figures.
He heard the faint clicks of feet from the street. He was far in the park, where he had stayed with Jen all night. The park was like their meeting place, down time, emergency lookout, everything.
He took out his phone and texted a few words and sent them.
R u on Terrace?
His phone buzzed a moment later.
Yeah. Just got on.
Voices trailed from across the park, where two shadowy figures emerged from around the corner of a building and was now on the other side of the fence that surrounded the park. The voices trailed from the two figures to Nick's ears.
The two figures turned around the fences gate and headed towards Nick. Nick was on the other side of the park's field as the cloudy night sky cast big shadows over the park. The figures were talking to one another as they cut through the field, toward Nick.
Relived, he shoved the phone into his pocket and headed toward the figures, meeting up with them in the middle of the field. Moonlight glared off the frosted grass making it glitter like a calm sea as he made his way to his companions.
The dimmed night illuminated the two figures, exposing the curves, outlines and features of the two shadows.
"Hey! I'm here." Nick called out to the two familiar faces, ahead of him.
"Hey Nick!" one of the two figures, said. They were now face to face but the two individuals still hung somewhat in the shadows of the clouds.
"Jen. Cy." He hugged Jen first then Cy for a couple moments longer.
"What happened? Where did you guys go? Are you alright?" Wide-eyed Nick shook his hands at both of them, both worried and relieved.
Jen held up her hands to slow his words coming out like a storm. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Calm down. One question at a time, please."
Nick still looked at them with worry in his eyes, but on the outside he forced his body to relax, "Okay, but please tell me everything," he whispered.
Jen exchanged a look between Cy then locked her gaze on Nicholas. "Well, first we went to Phantom and then we–" but Jen was easily cut off by Nicholas.
"Wait! You went to the Phantom?" Nick rubbed hard at his temples, growling in frustration under his breath. "I told you never to go there. They're too risky. Expectually with the things there that unveil the markings." He groaned, clearly frustrated, "Did you let Cy drink anything?"
"Yes," Jen replied quilty. "But only water–with a lemon twist." She added lowering her head, looking at her rose-red shoes in the grass, "And we may have encountered some–" she quickly snuck a glance, through her hair, at Cy then brought her eyes back up at Nick, "people willing to give us a hard time." She crossed her arms, looking fierce. "We had to sneak–well more like rush–out the back door."
"Who was it?" Nick demanded "Do you know him? Or her?"
"No, but he looked like part of the Night Walkers."
Cy, overhearing the conversation between Nick and Jen, raised an eyebrow. "Night Walkers?" she repeated, looking curious.
Nicholas and Jeneveive exchange a look before locking their gazes at Cyrene.
"Um," Nick spoke up first, "The Night Walkers are a gang of punk kids that usually hang out at night. They don't really do much in the daytime." Nick explained trying not to add suspicion.
"Oh," was all that Cy could say as she went back to the quiet state that she was before.
Nick eyed her up and down, and went back to listening Jen. "And he some had friends along with him."
Nick growled through his tensed jaw, with his eyes somewhere else. Jen recognized the look and took hold of Cy's hand, backing her up.
"What?" Cy squeaked, a little freaked out.
Jen ignored her as her eyes glued on Nick. His eyes dashed around the darkness in the park, expecually where the woods were. His nose was twitching with the wind as Jen squeezed Cy's hand, looking around as well.
Cy's feet were frozen to the ground because of confusion, shock and suspicion running all through her. Cy glanced around the darkened field and the streets and the forest, but saw nothing. At first.
Cy thought she was hallucinating but she quickly knew she wasn't. She caught pairs of glowing eyes in the dark woods. Dark figures began outlining themselves with the little light that shone through the thickened leaves and branches. Cy wanted to run but something inside her made her to stay put. As Nick growled, Jen's hand was reaching behind her back–Cy's hand was glued in Jen's other.
The wind whipped and stirred up in the moments passing, the moon hovered over the thick clouds casting only small spotlights throughout the park. The field was empty other than Nicholas, Jeneveive, and Cyrene standing in the middle of it. Cy soon found herself and her friends all facing the woods.
Nick was growling under his breath like a dog getting ready to bite. Jen's hand took hold of something behind her back that was hidden under her black jacket. They both stood as if ready for a war. Nick held his ground with his arms veining as if he really wanted to throw a punch but was holding back, and Jen stood right beside Nick, ready for what was going to come forth.
The winds danced everywhere around Cy, wrapping around her like it did every morning but this time instead of feeling calm about the soothing breezes, it sent a shiver up Cy's spine. She was scared. She didn't know what was going on but she knew she was about to find out.
There was a brief moment of stillness before the sound of a twig snapping echoed through the park. Cy saw out of the corner of her eyes something she has never seen before–even in her dreams. Nick's hands had snapped out misshapen and took form of wolf claws, black nails were outstretched. Jen swung a glint of something out from behind her and it illuminated by the faint light of the moon. Cy looked at it for a moment then realized it was a knife of some sort. She glared at both of them with eyes so wide she felt like they would rip right off her face.
"What the–" Cy staggered.
Shadows emerged from the forest, carrying the glowing eyes with them, as they closed in Cy's heartbeat ran faster and faster.
