I breathed deeply and looked up at the large school doors in front of me. Panic bubbles up from my gut to my throat, then came out of my mouth.
"Nope! I'm going home! Sorry!" I cried, turning around only to have Marco grab me and drag me in. "I'm sorry but I can't to this!" I wailed. "Calm down Abby!" Marco soothed. I had explained to him that I had been homeschooled since 8th grade, and that this was my first year of going to high school. I of course didn't tell him why I was homeschooled. Id be crazy to tell him.
We reached the lockers and he put me in front of the one that had the same number written across the paper the lady at the office had given me. "This is your locker, mines down there. Ok? This is your first period class, you have Math." Marco explained, pointing to a door a few yards away. "I have Science for first, and then we don't have any classes together until 5th, so I'll see you at lunch ok?" He asked, looking like he was telling this to a child. I gulped and nervously nodded. "Good." Marco stated, then walked off to his locker. Leaving me all alone. Crap.
The door creaked open much to loud for my taste. I was one of the first kids to enter, so most of the desks were empty. With only a few kids scattered around, talking and laughing. I gulped and took a shaky breath. Focus Abby. You can do this.
I walked over to a girl with wild brown curly hair who was looking down at her phone. "Um. Hi. Is, um. Is this seat taken?" I said quietly. The girl looked up and a bright smile bloomed across her face. "No, it's not. Are you the new kid? I heard that we'd get a new one." She said, standing up and shaking my hand. "I'm Jamie." The girl introduced her self. "Hi. I'm Abby." I said as I sat.
I put my bag down and sat facing the board. Not quite knowing what to do. Luckily, Jamie turned to me and smiled again. "So what school did you go to before?" She asked. I gulped. "Actually, I was homeschooled." I said softly, tugging at my beanie.
I could practically see the gears in Jamie's head turning. ABORT! ABORT! Quick! Think of something!
"I like puppies!" I blurted.
Cue face palm.
Really Abby! Really! To my surprise, Jamie just laughed. "I like puppies too." She said chuckling. "What else do you like?" Jamie offered. Oh thank god someone was taking control of this conversation. I told her about my love for reading and swimming, and nearly screamed in joy when she said she liked swimming to. "I know a great beach around here. Wanna go sometime?" Jamie asked.
Ok Abby. Don't faint. Don't faint.
"Um yeah! Yeah I'd love that!" I breathed out, smiling.
We had to cut our conversation due to the teacher walking in. I hadn't even noticed that the class had been filling up. "All right maggots!" He barked. I cocked an eyebrow. Maggots?
"We have a new student. Abby May? Please come forward." He called, reading from a paper. My eyes widened and I gulped. Jamie smiled encouragingly at me as I rose.
I walked to the front and turned, I noticed two things.
1) the group of popular kids that I had met on the bus where in this class, glaring at me.
2) EVERYONE WAS WATCHING ME!I nervously moved a lock of hair behind my ear and shifted uncomfortably. "Hi." I said awkwardly.
Silence.
The teacher cleared his throat and turned to me. "So Abby. Where are you from? Tell us about yourself." He ordered. I gulped again and looked at Jamie, and focused only on her.
How much should I tell?"Um, I was homeschooled from 8th grade until, well, now. And um," I cleared my throat and addressed the ceiling. "And I-uh.... I have C-" I stopped and froze. Remembering how pitiful everyone seemed to turn when ever a person learned my secret. I didn't want that here. I wanted kids here to be my friend because of who I was, and not because of my Cancer.
