"Are you sure about this?" Nyx questioned.

"No. But I want to try." I admitted. "So please help me?"

"Yeah. But a Puppy?" Nyx raised an eyebrow as she held out her hand.

I took her hand and held it tightly. "Not my best idea, but sometimes you have to run before you can walk." I admitted as I pulled into the parking lot.

"So we can go to the pet store and play with puppies. We don't have to get a dog." Nyx told me. "I'm glad you're trying and all, but you're already trembling."

I instinctively pulled my hand from her's and placed both of them on the steering wheel then I sighed deeply. "If I get to know the animal better, I won't be so scared of it right?"

"Probably. Hey... Do you want to talk about why you don't like dogs before we go in there?" Nyx asked.

My fingers tapped the wheel nervously, the car's engine still going but Nyx turned it off to fill the air with silence. Even though she stared off ahead of herself, I could tell she was paying full attention to me.

"When I was little, my dad had a Pit bull. He was a friendly enough dog, and he would protect me when I went outside in the yard." I explained. "Then, all of a sudden, he attacked me. He latched onto my arm so hard he broke the bone. My dad came out and had to shoot him to get him to let go."

"Rabies." Nyx muttered.

"Yes." I nodded. "The vet told me that's what it was. But just because it wasn't his fault, doesn't mean I'll just forget nearly loosing my arm. Or the white teeth as he barked at me like I had broken a sacred trust. How can you think it'll be okay when a loyal dog turned on me so quickly? What if it happens again?"

"Get the dog a Rabies Vaccine." Nyx told me. "It'll be fine."

"I know you and dad will help me with the puppy, and I want him to get attached to you, so we can make him a service dog."

"What if we get a girl dog?"

"Then she'll like you." I rolled my eyes.

"I want you to pick it out." Nyx said. "But if I'm going to be completely honest, if you buy me a small dog, I'll fucking leave."

"I know. We'll get a big one." I sighed.

"As your girlfriend though, do whatever makes you comfortable. I'll support your decision." Nyx put her hand on my lap lovingly but I just scoffed.

"Do you have Rabies?"

"Dunno. I get shot all the time." Nyx smirked. "You ready?"

I sighed deeply. "Yes. I'm ready."

We got out of the car and headed into the building. There were puppies in the cages where the one wall you looked through was glass. About twenty cages lined the right wall, and the left was filled with items you would buy to take care of and play with your new friend.

The puppies immediately started barking as we walked in. However they calmed down after a few seconds.

The man at the front desk glanced up at us. "You just browsing?"

"We're looking to get one." Nyx admitted. "I need a Service Dog since I'm blind. What are the smartest breeds you have here?"

The man stood up and walked us over to the cages where the puppies did one of a few different things:

They stared at us or barked.

They played with the toys in their crates.

Or they slept.
