FBI Headquarters, Washington DC
July 28th, 1997
7:36 AM"Morning, Mulder." Dana Scully cheerfully announced as she walked into the dismal basement office that she and her partner shared.
Her partner, Fox Mulder, looked up and greeted her as well. Dana approached his desk holding a drink carrier with two coffees in it and a bag filled with two cannolis from her favorite bakery.
"Aw, honey, you made breakfast," Mulder said jokingly as he grabbed a coffee and a cannoli from her.
"Well, they say the key to a Vitamin D deprived, socially awkward FBI Agent's heart is through his stomach," Dana said sarcastically as she sipped her milky white coffee.
"Well, lucky for this 'Vitamin D' deprived agent, we'll be catching some rays this next week," Mulder said as he stood up and walked towards his beloved projector.
Oh boy. Here we go. Dana thought to herself as she turned around in her coveted swivel chair. (Mulder had the desk and she thought it only fair that she have the swivel chair.)
"Gulf Shores Alabama. Known for its white sand beaches and crystal clear water," Mulder said as he switched slides of the magnificent beaches he described. "This pleasant beach town is also known for its excellent seafood selection-" Before he could finish he was interrupted by a certain skeptical agent.
"Get on with it, please," Scully said with a mouthful of cannoli.
"And as of recent, a strand of not one, not two, but six murders." He said as he flipped through grizzly photos of each victim's body. Scully began to feel squeamish, which was odd with her being a doctor and all. Perhaps she just wasn't in the mood to see dead bodies before eight AM. Either way, she just wanted her partner to finish his spiel so that she could organize the files and dust the office like she had planned to do that day.
"Mulder, just cut to the part about ghost pirates or man-eating shrimps, please," Scully said as she yawned. Mulder rolled his eyes and switched through at least twenty slides before he arrived at the paranormal slide Scully was ever so eager to see.
"Oscar Yentz: a well known psychic matchmaker in the area predicted each one of the victim's deaths. Not only did he predict their fates, he matched each victim up to one another months and years prior."
"Mulder, are you saying that the victims were romantically involved with one another?" Scully asked, intrigued. Mulder tapped his finger to his nose.
"Bingo," He said with a mischievous smile."The first victims were Molly Griswald and her husband Daniel Knightly," He flipped back a few slides and landed on a picture of the two before they were murdered. A happy couple, it seemed. "Married for only two months, the Birmingham couple took a romantic weekend to the beach, only, they would never return. The two were found tied to each other, washed ashore right in front of the coastal facing side of the Bay Street Hotel."
"Let me guess," Scully began. "We're staying at the Bay Street Hotel."
"Coastal side," Mulder said as he rubbed his hands together smiling.
Scully rolled her eyes and leaned back in her swivel chair. She knew that her nonchalant attitude was what made Mulder tick. He liked to be challenged, to be questioned. After working four years with him Scully knew all of his weaknesses, his pressure points. She even knew which drawer he kept his socks and undies in-- Before you finish that thought, she did his laundry one time when he was in the hospital. She's not that infatuated with him. At least, that's what she told herself, anyway.
"Pack your bags, Scully. You and I are taking an all-American road trip to sweet home Alabama." Mulder said in an awfully tacky southern accent. He slapped his knee at the end of his sentence, and that was Scully's cue to say that she needed to use the restroom.

Scully's Apartment
July 29th
5:24 AMDana Scully stood on the porch of her downtown apartment before the crack of dawn, waiting for her partner to pick her up. She wore a plain white tee shirt and a pair of pink sweat pants that went down to her calves. On her feet, she wore fuzzy socks and slip on sandals. Yes, she knew she looked absolutely ridiculous, but she planned on being absolutely, ridiculously comfortable on their fifteen-hour drive from DC to Alabama.
Just as she began to doze off standing upright, she heard a car horn beep. It was Mulder sitting in the driver's seat of a 1992 Honda Civic Hatchback. Complete with wood paneling on the sides. It was the ugliest car she had ever seen, but Mulder smiling ear to ear in the monstrosity made her grin.
"Stylish." Dana joked as Mulder got out of the car.
"I thought, if we're going on a road trip, we might as well do it right." He laughed. Scully walked forward, as she put her short hair in a messy ponytail.
"Wowza," Mulder said as he approached Scully.
"Make fun of me now but we'll see who's laughing in seven hours when your legs begin to cramp up in those jeans," Dana said as she took her duffle bag to the car. Mulder chuckled, grabbed Scully's huge suitcase and made his way to the hatchback.
The two got in the car and Mulder's eyes lit up with excitement as he opened the console between them. "Scully, look what I got for the trip. You're gonna love this," he began to say. "Four bags of sunflower seeds because, you can't go wrong with seeds," He dumped all four bags on her lap and her jaw dropped. "Twix, Gobstoppers, Twizzlers. If it's candy and has a funny name, I've got it. Oh, and you're really going to go crazy over this," he said as dug deeper into the console. "I got every Elvis cassette tape that the library had." He said beaming.
She couldn't believe her eyes. 'He really went all out on this.' She thought to herself. It was an incredibly sweet gesture of him and she only hoped to reciprocate the enthusiasm.
"Wow, Mulder. This is definitely one for the books." She said as she gently placed the pile of crap food back in the console between them. He smiled and put the car in drive.
"Let's get this show on the road," Mulder said casually as he placed Elvis Presley's Greatest Hits Volume One in the cassette player.
Scully smiled at his boyish excitement. She hadn't seen him this happy in a long time, especially since his mother had recently suffered a stroke. Dana also knew that Samantha still weighed in on his mind like a ton of bricks. She felt like this road trip would be good for them both. A little open road was always good for clearing the mind. After all, what could go wrong being stuck in a car with your platonic work partner for fifteen hours straight? Nothing.
