After what must have been half an hour, I had finally reached the base of the mountain. I was alone, which birthed a sliver of hope- maybe Nick wouldn't show. But that hope was quickly diminished, as soon as I had formed the previous thought, there was a rustle to the left of me, where I had formed a makeshift trail. As if on cue, Nick appeared, trudging though the flora, with a smirk that all but yelled nowhere to run.
"Yo, nerd! I wasn't expecting you to actually show. That's a shame, now I don't get to deal with you myself," he spoke gruffly. He stared at me, and I flinched, but I knew I couldn't show fear, because that would only encourage the bully.
"Is this fun for you?" I began, my voice less certain than I had hoped.
"There's a reason no one climbs this mountain," I continued, my voice building up more confidence.
"Do you know why? It's because it's dangerous," I stated.
"I could lose my life out here, but you don't give a damn."
"That's true," Nick finally spoke after I had finished my speech,
     "I don't give a damn."

In retrospect, I don't even know why I thought that might work.

"Fine," I said with a sigh. "But I'll make it through. No matter what.  And I'll prove to you that I can."
And with that, I took my first step forward and began my journey.

I clearly hadn't thought this through. After what seemed like hours of intense hiking, I was coated in sweat, and was only maybe one-third of the way to the top. I had started to worry. What if my family returned home and I was still gone? I left a note just in case, but all it contained was that I was going out for a while and would return home soon. It had crossed my mind that I'd be out longer than expected, but the sun was already disappearing over the horizon, leaving a shadow over the town. Nick has certainly returned home by now, I thought to myself, but I couldn't bring myself to turn around.
Around the halfway mark, the hike grew less vertical and more curvy, giving my legs somewhat of a break. The mountain itself was covered in trees, making it so that I was in a forest. I had already sat down to eat the food I had packed for myself, and my water rations had run dry. Soon enough, the sun was no longer visible through the canopy of trees, and I was fearful that I wouldn't make it home until morning. The night was cold and unforgiving, so I donned my sweater and retrieved my flashlight from my bag. I clicked it on and started on once again through the forest. After not much time, I had began to hear rustling in nearby bushes, causing my head to swivel around in fear. Suddenly turning my head in this manner caused my glasses to fly off of my head. I didn't hear them land. Unfortunately for me, I had been cursed with terrible eyesight, and even with the flashlight turned on, it was still to dark to see anything other than one large, looming shape that was the world around me.
I decided that the only way to find my glasses would be to go on my hands and knees and search through my sense of touch. It hadn't quite crossed my mind that perhaps had been a poor choice. In the midst of my unbalanced craze, probably looking like an idiot, my hand suddenly felt nothing. I put my hand a couple inches below, thinking it might be a random sudden slope, but still nothing. I tried lowering my hand even more, but this time, I lost what little balance I had left, on three of my limbs and fell headfirst into what I then discovered to be a giant chasm! Then and there my whole body froze as a piercing scream tore itself from the bottom of my throat. The fall seemed like hours, but when I saw the bottom, all I could do was close my eyes and clutch my notebook tightly. It was only a moment before I collided with the hard ground and lost my consciousness.

Huh.

Turns out you don't meet any new characters in this chapter after all. Sorry about that. Next chapter, I promise! Oh and by the way, it's crossed my mind that nobody's even reading this, sooo... Unless someone says I should keep writing it, I might stop after a few more updates, I don't know. I mean, I don't want to, but what's the point, if there's no one to enjoy it? Eh, I'll figure it out. If anyone ends up reading this, thanks! I really appreciate it.
