MELODY'S POV
Jack seemed slightly off this morning, I guess. He seemed distant at first, but after I mentioned it, he changed quickly. I bet he just doesn't want to tell me, but I don't really blame him because last time he tried to tell me something, I had told a friend, and she told everyone. He was so humiliated...
As we turn into the school doors, I notice that the halls are almost completely empty and dead silent. There's an announcement going on, but we're never this quiet. Not even a whisper is to be heard.
Over the speakers, I hear, "This is not a drill. Report to your classrooms silently. If you are not yet in a classroom, and you can't get to one, hide in the usual spots we tell you about on drills." It must be a lock-down. I feel tense.
We run for the classrooms, but silently.
Me and Jack go into the nearest classroom, the band one, which is huge.
Me and Jack hide side by side. His breathing is slow and steady, as if it's a normal day for him. I know that he's been through things like this before. When he was seven, he was trapped in a bank that was being robbed with no one but Nico. When he was nine, he was kidnapped and nearly killed. When he was a baby, he was abused by his birth parents. When he was eleven, he was held captive by a ghost, and had no one to talk to but the voices in his head for hours. He had been through things like that for most of his life. I feel really bad for him...
Jack looks at me like I had told him to eat a dirty boot (mwahaha reference to my dad's childhood). I realize I had been staring at him for the last few minutes. I blush and look away, embarrassed. He tilts his head at me, and then looks around the room. Everyone there looked worried, and they were probably panicking about death. Jack looked so chill like nothing was wrong. He scanned the room, meeting people's gazes, as if telling them it was going to be alright. He was a nice person that way. He smiled at them, telling them that they would be just fine.
I heard a bang on the door. "OPEN UP!" Someone yelled. Jack's eyes widened. He nods to me, and I shake my head "NO NO NO". He stands up, and the teacher shakes her head violently.
Jack opens the door, but the man can't see anyone in the room but Jack.
