Cody’s POV

 

I watched as Campbell, Jake, and Josh rushed over to the table to eat their grilled cheese sandwiches. Maggie just sat still on the staircase.

I made an extra one for her. She is going to eat it…

I walked over to her with the sandwich on a plate.

“Here.” I said, sliding the plate into her hands.

She looked up at me and shook her head.

“I’m not hungry, Cody.” She said sternly.

“Sure you are. Maggie, you have to eat. Come on.” I said, sitting next to her.

She was silent and still for a minute.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

She looked at me again, and then she looked back down at the sandwich.

“Are you scared about your dad?” I asked.

“Yes.” She said.

I sighed.

“Maggie, you’re going to be fine. Trust me.” I said.

“How would you know? Cody, you don’t know what it’s like to feel so afraid of your dad.” She said, looking up at me with tears in her eyes.

I moved the sandwich off her lap and stood her up. I then wrapped my arms around her comforting her. She hugged me back.

“You’re right. I don’t know what it’s like to feel afraid of my dad, but I do know what it’s like to feel afraid for you. I don’t know exactly what you go through, but what you’ve been telling me, I feel so afraid for you.” I said, letting go of her and looking into her eyes.

She sat back down on the stairs and started eating the grilled cheese sandwich.

I smiled.

She looked up and smiled at me.

“Thank you, Cody.” She said, still smiling.

“Anytime.” I said, sitting back down beside her and eating my sandwich.

“Cody, what’s today?” She asked.

“Monday, the…10th, I think. Why?” I asked.

“Tomorrow is my sister’s 10th birthday.” She said.

“Are you going to call her?” I asked, taking a big bite out of my sandwich.

“Yeah, I do every year.” She said, placing the crust of her sandwich on the plate.

I nodded my head.

“What time is it?” She asked.

“You’re just full of questions tonight, aren’t you?” I asked, taking out my iPhone laughing.

She laughed.

“I guess so.” She said.

“It’s…6:34pm.” I said, sliding my phone back into my pocket.

“Only 6:34? It feels like its 5am.” She said, lightly laughing.

“Yeah, today was a long day.” I said, standing up and taking our plates to the sink.

“Cody, you and Maggie are dating, yeah?” Jake asked, smirking.

I turned around and shot him a look.

“No.” I said.

“You guys would be a good couple though!” Josh said.

I rolled my eyes.
