"Surprise!" I greeted, but my grin turned into a frown when I saw Kae's half-asleep face on the other side of the door. Her eyes were squinted with irritation towards me disturbing her sleep, and she was stuffing her arm into a t-shirt. As I let her register what was going on, my eyes tipped downward over the rest of her body. Her bronzed, thickening thighs were bare and her toes were painted with white. But that's not what caught my eye - baby girl wasn't wearing any panties at all.

"Osiris?" She blinked rapidly as if she was dreaming. "What're you - it's two in the morning!"

I felt my face blush with embarrassment. "I, um, can go find a motel if you want me to. Sorry to wake you." I turned to leave, feeling so stupid for coming all the way to Philly for no reason. Maybe she didn't want to see me.

"Iris, wait," she yawned and stepped aside to let me in. I tugged my bag over my shoulder and slowly stepped inside, avoiding her eyes. "I'm sorry, okay? I'm just surprised you're here. You didn't tell me you were coming."

And you didn't tell me you were living with your girl but aight.

"Yeah, I wanted to surprise you and come here instead of you coming all the way to LA again." Maybe I should have called. "You sure I can stay here?"

When I wouldn't move, she laced her fingers through mine and pulled me further into the house and to the couch. Reluctantly, I sat and she sat beside me, our thighs touching. I was getting anxious, my throat was closing up, and I felt like the walls were beginning to push inward. She gave my bag a tug and set it on the floor. "Iris are you okay?"

"Kae you can go back to sleep if you want. I'll just go drive around town until the morning. It's no big deal. That's what I should have done to begin with." I stood so fast the room spun, and I gripped the strap of my bag to make a quick exit, but she cut me off and stood in my way. "Kae, let me go. I'll come back later."

"But I want you here now," she pouted. "Just sleep on the couch, okay? You're fine." So I sat down, slowly, once again avoiding her eyes. She tore my bag from my grasp and set it on the other side of the room and grabbed a blanket for me. "I don't want you in some roach-infested motel when we're perfectly capable of letting you stay here."

I didn't say anything.

"Iris." She touched her palm against my cheek and lifted my chin. "I'm not mad at you, okay? I'm glad you're here. Just relax." She took her spot next to me and shifted so she was facing me. "How did you even get here?"

"I flew."

"And how did you know where we live?"

I shrugged. "I asked around and someone pointed me in the right direction."

She squinted but let it go. "So you came here just to visit or...?" She watched my fidgeting fingers and chewed her lip. "Iris are you running from something?"

I hesitated, shook my head. Shrugged. "I'm just frustrated and wanted a break, so I came to Philly."

"Frustrated about what? What's wrong?"

So I told her about what happened with Melissa, and Kae didn't react how I expected her to. She wasn't angry, she didn't blame me; she listened with an open mind and I appreciated that. I inhaled, exhaled slowly. By the end, she was every bit of shocked and sympathetic. "She ended up dying a few days later, and Ra won't come out of his room. Might as well just move out the place and let him have it. Ain't like I'm welcomed there anymore."
