Bookstores always gave me some sort of peace. The quiet was deafening but I liked it that way, and the intriguing smell of brand new books wasn't that bad either. Overall it was just calming to me - they always have been a safe haven for me. Not for reading, though, for the variety of sketchbooks, pencils, paints, and whatever else I could use to improve my art in any way that I could.

"Man, come on," Ra groaned from behind me as I strolled down the aisles, purposefully annoying him by taking my time. "Pick your shit and let's go, my nigga."

"Watch your mouth," I scolded tightly. I nodded towards a young lady holding the hand of a young girl - maybe four or five. "There's kids here."

"So? You act like they ain't gonna hear this when they're older." I shot him an unamused look, and he rolled his eyes. "Fine, you take your jolly ole' time and I'll go see if I can find a comic book or somethin'." He trudged off.

My goal was to come in, find some new sketchbooks and charcoal pencils, and make a quick exit. But as soon as I stepped into the air conditioned building, I realized I was in heaven. I hadn't been to a bookstore in a long time, so I was gonna let myself enjoy it. I'm such a nerd.

Whatever relaxed atmosphere this shop was giving off, completely diminished the second the sliding glass doors parted to reveal a woman. Small, but a woman nonetheless. Her attire was effortless, caramel skin free of any makeup or even a blemish. Her phone was pressed to her ear in conversation, but yet I wanted to talk to her. About what? I didn't know, but I was drawn to her. Her aura commanded the attention of the entire store. She was completely oblivious to this, of course, but I noticed she was different.

She shot the cashier a smile when she was greeted upon entering, and she was heading to the back of the store where the magazines and cookbooks were. Baby girl can cook? Damn!

For half a second she and I met eyes and I quickly looked away and made myself seem busy with browsing. I didn't even want any books anymore - I wanted her. Or at least know who she was.

When I looked up, Ra was staring directly at me over the bookshelves with a look of amusement. He cut his eyes to her, back to me, and grinned. I waved him off.

"So you just gon' not go talk to her?" He appeared behind me when only seconds ago he was at least six aisles away.

"Can you not use your powers with all these people around?" I grumbled under my breath, pushing past him with no intention of entertaining his antics. Usually I'm the childish one who's always cracking jokes but he took on that role today. "I'm not gonna talk to her either."

"Why not? You were damn near eye raping her," he pointed out, following on the backs of my heels - literally. "Just go say hi, I know you want to."

"No I don't," I lied. Of course I wanted to say hi, and a lot more. Problem was, I didn't know how to just start a conversation with a beautiful woman. Yes, I'm intimidated by powerful women. Sue me. My palms were sweaty just thinking about actually carrying on a conversation with her. "I want to get some sketchbooks and leave."

"Then why are you in the children's section now?" He doubled over with laughter when we both realized I was in another section of books instead of my intended section. I hadn't even noticed; the girl had my mind reeling with intrigue. "If you don't, I'll do it for you."

I spun on my heels and stared at him. "And say what?"

"You've never talked to a girl?"

"No?" I shook my head. "Look, my only relationship was five years and we were best friends for five before that. Besides, she came onto me. So no I've never had to approach a woman."
