“Harry are you ready?” I whisper. Though it is dark in my room I can see his face, illuminated by the city lights coming from the window. The feint calls of Capitol citizens can be heard. They’re having a parade and screaming out “Hunger Games” in the streets, excited for tomorrow.
“As I’ll ever be.”
“…I’m so scared.”
“You’ll be fine. I’ll make sure of it. We stick together no matter what.”
“Right,” I smile and Harry kisses me. I stare into his eyes. Tonight is the last night I can. Tonight is the last night I can hold him in my arms and feel safe to sleep beside him. It’s the hardest thing about these games for me. I start to tear up, and cuddle into Harry more. He holds me for a while, but after a bit sits up in bed. He runs his hand over his head and stands up, putting on pants and a shirt.
“Where are you going?”
“I just need some fresh air for a moment, so I’m going to go on the roof. I won’t be gone long.”
“Okay.”
“Get some sleep love, I’ll be back in half an hour at most.”
I watch as Harry leaves my room and closes my door. I doze off shortly after.
I wake up at 3am, and look around my room. Harry isn’t there, though he left almost 4 hours ago. I stand up and run down the hall to check the room assigned to him, but his bed is empty and untouched. My heart drops, and I start towards the elevator. The ride up to the roof is agonizing, and I can’t imagine why he would be out so long. I’m unsure what I’ll find and at the back of my head, I think I don’t want to know. When the elevator door finally opens I step onto the roof and look around for him, but I can’t see him.
“What are you doing up here?”
I turn around to see Niall from District 2. His hair is messy and he’s wearing a tight shirt that accents his muscles. I swallow hard and stare at him for a long time before he laughs and relaxes his posture.
“He’s over there if you’re wondering. Sorry to keep him from you, we were havin’ a good chat.”
“Thanks.”
Niall smiles at me and heads to the elevator. I walk over to where Niall had told me Harry is as soon as Niall has closed the elevator door. Harry is sitting, his legs crossed, on the edge of the building.
“You were more then half and hour.”
Harry turns around to look at me and smiles.
“Lost track of time. Sorry.”
“No hard feelings. You were with Niall?”
“Yeah. Having a good laugh before we kill each other. Sounds a little sick doesn’t it?”
“Only a little.”
“He and I were just talking about what it was like before.”
“Before what?”
“Panem. Before the Capitol you know? How our futures would be different.”
“You shouldn’t think like that. It just makes everything hurt more.”
“Imagine though, if the story of my life could be different. Niall and I would be pals. Louis and I might even get along. I could spend the rest of my life with you, have kids, be so happy. Be free.”
“Harry…”
“I know it’s just a stupid dream but… I dunno.”
I sit beside Harry and take him into my arms. He kisses my neck, but I can feel him quiver against my skin as he holds back tears.
