josh stared solemnly out at the dirt road in front of him while the stale wind blew dust in his face. his friend jesse was attempting to comfort him, but josh's idea of getting over his recent break up wasn't hitting up the closest bar he could find. he couldn't help but think about the next time he would have to face his ex girlfriend.
"i'm so over girls right now." josh sighed to his friend.
"screw her, you're a great guy," jesse scoffed, kicking the dusty ground, "sure, debby was hot as hell, but a girl like her is only good for one night."
josh gave a weak laugh and tried not to think about the many nights that they were together.
"in the end she said i was 'too boring', it kinda caught me off guard."
"yeah, right! who does she think did a fucking spontaneous backflip off the bar the other night?" jesse beamed, taking a swig of the beer in his hand, "by the way, dude, where'd you learn to flip like that?"
"i don't really know," josh shrugged, "i kinda used to be into that stuff when i was a kid-"
his words were cut off by noise in the distance. a rumble in the earth made ripples in jesse's beer bottle. josh listened closely to upbeat music playing softly, accompanying the rumbling. jesse climbed to stand on the railing to get a better look, "i don't see anything yet," he said, shielding the rays from the sunset out of his eyes as he gazed at the horizon, "oh, wait! there it is!"
"the circus?" josh raised an eyebrow, as the familiar hum of carnival music hit his ears.
"looks like you'll have something to take your mind off of debby, after all."
