Chapter Twenty Seven
Lin and I went straight to the hospital from the airport. I ran straight to the room my mother told me Kai was in. She sat against the wall opposite from his room. She stood up when she saw me.
"Momma!" I exclaimed. I ran to her and we hugged. She turned her attention soon after to Lin who was holding Coral. While those two reconnected, I walked to the door that would open up and show my brother. There was a caution sign on the door. I walked inside the room, it was trashed. There were pillows and blankets scattered around the room. One of the three big windows in the room was now cardboard, the window had been smashed. The small flatscreen tv, which I assume used to hang on the wall, was now shattered on the floor. There was a couch under the windows, the cushions we thrown in two different spots around the room. I then noticed the bed, and my brother, who was restrained to the bed. His wrists were tied to the side rails. All the way from his for head to his toes was restrained with belts. He was asleep. I lifted a chair that was laid on the ground and pulled it so I could sit next to the bed. I put my hand on his right thigh, on the leg that was amputated. He had no blanket on, I could see it was amputated from just under the knee. Kai woke up with a sudden jolt. His entire body shook. I could see him struggling to look at me, I scooted my chair closer to his head.
"Kai?" I asked. He made a noise. There was a strap under his chin preventing him from being able to speak. I undid the chin strap.
"Saint?" He asked.
"Why are they keeping you like this?" I asked.
"Because they are assholes," he replied.
"Hey kid, watch your mouth," I said.
"How's the baby?" He asked.
"Coral, she's good. She can't wait to meet her oldest uncle," I replied.
"Can I see her?" He asked. I smiled. I stop up from my chair and walked out of the room. Lin and my mother were sitting down, my mother was holding Coral. I took Coral from her and turned around.
"It's not a good idea to take her in there," my mother said. I turned to look at her.
"He's not a criminal mom, you're sure treating him like one," I replied. I walked back into the room and sat on the chair. Kai was looking at Coral.
"She's beautiful," he said.
"She's got the brightest blue eyes, just like you," I replied. Kai smiled. I got serious. "What did you do here?" I asked.
"I destroyed everything, they called it a psychotic break. The doctor told mom that I lashed out my anger because I couldn't hold it in any longer," he replied.
"So how are you doing?" I asked.
"I'm doing great and I don't know how much longer I can stand to be chained up. Say, do you think you could let me out?" He asked.
"Kai, I don't think that's a good idea," I replied.
"God Saint, you're just like everyone else! This is all your fault anyways!" Kai yelled.
"What?" I asked.
"Mom knew all the bad waters around the island and uncle Keoni didn't! Mom was in New York with you! If she had been here I would still have two legs and I would still be able to surf!!" He screamed. Coral started crying. Kai was hysterical at this point. He was wiggling around tying to escape his restraints, he was muttering things I couldn't understand. I left the room and started to calm Coral. A few nurses ran into the room and soon, Kai was calm again. Or, I just didn't hear him screaming anymore. My mother, Lin, and I walked down to the cafeteria. Lin got us tea and then we found a table to sit at. My mother was holding Coral.
"So how long has he been like this?" I asked.
"Since he woke up missing half a leg," my mother replied.
"When are you getting him out of here and getting him somewhere he can get help?" I asked.
"He's not leaving here for another few months. There are no good rehabilitation facilities on any of the islands, they're going to keep him here and move him up to psych or something," she replied. She seemed irritated and exhausted. Lin got her attention.
"There's a really good psychiatric facility not too far from the house," Lin said.
"Excuse me?" My mom asked. I looked at Lin.
"There are tons of choices for different facilities around New York where Kai could get better treatment," Lin explained.
"That's actually not a bad idea mom," I butt in.
"There's no way I'm letting you take my thirteen year old crippled son to New York!" She shouted.
"Mom please, he's going to get better so much faster if he's somewhere where people are going to listen to him, not strap him down on a bed. The staff here are too under qualified to deal with Kai in the state he's in right now. They're just going to drug him until they rip everything out of him and he's not the same person," I said.
"I'll think about it," she replied. My phone started ringing, it was an unknown number. I stood from the table, walked away, and answered.
"You have a call from the MeadowView correctional facility. To accept the call please press pound, reminder, all calls will be recorded," said an automated message. I pressed the pound button. I wondered which ex-boyfriend it could be. The one that almost killed my daughter, or the one that almost raped me.
"Saint?" The voice rang out, it was Chris, the one that almost raped me. And although he did a horrific thing, I didn't hold a grudge against him. Deep down he was a good guy.
"Chris?" I asked. I could hear him sigh over the line.
"Saint, thank god. I know I don't deserve any favors, not after what I did, but I need you to testify during court," he said.
"Testify?" I asked.
"I don't know, I know that you know I'm not a bad guy. I'm facing twenty years in prison if you don't come in and vouch for me. Please Saint," he begged.
"Chris, I'd love too. I know you didn't mean what you did, you were drunk and it was the first time you'd ever done anything bad like that. But Chris, even though I know you'd never do it again, what if you did? What if you actually did rape someone, or you did end up hurting someone because I said that you didn't mean what you did to me and Lin? Chris, I can't be responsible for your future mistakes, even if we don't know you'll make any," I said. Chris was crying now.
"God Saint, please. I can't be in here for twenty years! I can't miss twenty years of my life because of one night. My life was perfect before that night. You don't owe me anything, but I'll die in here if you don't help me," he replied. I sighed.
"When's your hearing?" I asked.
"In two days," he replied.
"Chris, God, I'm in Hawaii," I said.
"You're where?!? No, no, no, no, no, no! You have to come back, please," he begged even more.
"I know we weren't planning on staying more than a few days, but my brother is in a really bad place right now, and family comes first. If anything, I can testify over the phone, or there can be a retrial. I'm sorry, I'll do what I can. But if I can't get Kai on a plane to New York within 24 hours, I won't be able to make it," I said.
"You have one minute left," the automated voice said.
"Okay Saint, thank you. I hope your brother gets better," Chris said.
"Thank you, I'll hopefully talk to you soon," I replied. And then the call ended.
