Chapter Thirty Three

There come a point in your life where everything you've ever worked towards is shattered to ashes. Now I'm not sure if this happens to everyone, but it's happening to me. I'm back at home now, laying in my bed, staring out my bedroom door, and looking down the hall at Coral's bedroom door, where her hospital sign still hangs.
"Seven pounds, 0 ounces, 1:35 am, August 26th, 2015," I read it aloud over and over and over again. There were footsteps on the stairs and then I saw Kai walking towards my bedroom. He was holding a mug.
"I brought you some hot chocolate," he said, smiling as he made his way into my bedroom. He sat the mug on my bedside table. And held my hand. "They're going to find her Saint," he assured me.
"Kai, even if they do-."
"They will," he interrupted.
"I can't do this anymore," I finished.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"Kai, I can't stay in this city. I can't stay in this house," I replied.
"What are you saying?" He asked.
"I'm saying that if... when Coral is found, I'm moving us back to Hawaii where mom can help me take care of her, you, and myself," I said. Kai stood from the bed in an outrage.
"Saint we can't!" He yelled.
"Kai, I can't do this anymore," I said.
"You can! You have too! You can't stay here, but I can't leave, I can't go back to that place!" He shouted.
"Kai, you can learn to surf again," I assured him.
"I don't want to surf again, I don't want to see the ocean ever again! I like it here where the water is safe," he said.
"I hope that someday you'll forgive me," I said.
"If you move me back there, I'll never forgive you!" He yelled as he stormed out of the room and back downstairs. I wanted to cry, but at this point there are no more tears to be shed.

I had gotten a text from Lin saying he'd just returned home from the hospital and had some news about Coral. I got out of bed, put on some sweatpants, a tee shirt, and pulled my disgusting dirty hair into a ponytail. I slipped some slippers on as I left the house and walked the short distance to Lin's. I walked right inside without knocking. Lin was in the living room, Vanessa was nursing him.
"Saint!" He cheered. I rushed to his side.
"What's the news on my baby?" I asked.
"The police have a lead. A young man was seen in Pittsburg with a baby girl at a gas station buying diapers and formula and that kid of stuff. The attendant at the restaurant said that they knew it was Coral because they couldn't mistake that hair for anything," he said.
"So they've almost found her?" I asked.
"Yes Saint, they're so close," he replied. I hugged him tightly.
"Ow," Lin said.
"Sorry, I'm sorry," I replied. We smiled at each other, and then he pulled me in for another hug.

It was around 2am when my phone began ringing. I snapped awake. Who would be calling at 2am?
"Hello?" I answered frantically.
"Saint?" A man asked.
"Yes, yes, who is this?" I asked.
"Who do you think?" It was at this point that the mans deep voice resonated in my mind.
"Brandon," I said.
"Hello my love," he greeted.
"Brandon, where's my daughter?" I asked.
"Have you forgotten she's my daughter too?" He asked.
"Brandon please, where are you? Where is she?" I asked.
"I'll give her back," he said.
"You will?" I asked.
"But you have to come get her, alone. No police, no Kai, no boyfriend, no Lin. Alone?" He said.
"Where are you?" I asked.
"At an old friends place in Pittsburgh. Be here in three hours and you can have her back. Actually, you know what? Bring Lin," he said.
"It's a six hour drive to Pittsburgh! What if there aren't any flights?" I asked.
"Then you'd better get driving," he replied as he hung up the phone. I sprinted over to Lin's and knocked on the door. In a few minutes Vanessa opened the door.
"Saint?" She asked groggily.
"Vanessa, where's Lin?" I asked.
"The living-." I pushed past Vanessa and into the living room where Lin had just woken up.
"Lin! Brandon has Coral in Pittsburgh! He wants you and I there in three hours! We have to get to the airport," I shouted.
"What?" He asked.
"Saint, Lin can't walk," Vanessa said.
"Three hours? We're never going to make that," Lin said.
"We can if you just-." I stopped as Vanessa put her hand on my shoulder.
"Saint, there are some things as a mother, that you just will not be able to do. This is one of those things. You need to phone the police," she said.
"But Brandon said-."
"That man, no matter what you do, will not hurt that child. I'm sure he was once a good man, he wouldn't hurt his own child," she assured me.

And so we called the police.

Lin and I sat in a conference room surrounded by a group of police officers. We sat at the police station for a few hours they told me to call Brandon. The phone started ringing.
"Hello Saint," Brandon greeted.
"I just landed," I said.
"I'll text you the address," he replied. He hung up. A few moments later the address came through. And the Pittsburgh police were on their way.

Four hours later Lin and I still sat in the conference room. At this point, Vanessa, Sebastian, Thayne and Kai had joined us as well. I stood, pacing around the room until there was a knock at the door. And a policewoman came through holding my sleeping daughter in her arms.
"Coral!!" I cried. I moved swiftly to the policewoman and took my child. I fell to the floor and cried as she continued sleeping in my arms. Thayne was at my side in an instant consoling me. Vanessa helped Thayne stand me up. They walked me over to where Lin was sitting so he could see Coral.
"Hi baby," he greeted her. He was crying too, everyone was crying.

When things calmed down a bit, we were still at the police station, I spoke to Lin,
"I can't stay here anymore." He looked at me with Coral in his arms.
"I know," he said. He looked down at his daughter.
"We're moving back to Hawaii," I told him. I watched as a single tear fell to his cheek.
"That'll be for the best," he said.
"I'm sorry, but I just can't be in this city," I said.
"I know, I know," he replied. He pulled Coral in tight, like he wouldn't ever let her go. Even though one day very soon, he'd have to let her go, for good.
