Chapter One

I got of the bus, listening to all of the kids laugh and point and make fun of me.

My mother waited for me at the bus stop.

I walked towards her with a hard face.

"Sweetie-

"Dont sweetie me."

"Well I have some good news but I guess you don't want to hear it."

"What is it this time? You bought a new couch? Shirt?"

"I'm getting transfered, I sold the house, I bought a new one in New Jersey, we're moving!"

My hard face went away. "Are your serious?!?"

She beamed. "Yep! I packed us up today, and we're moving tomorrow!"

I screamed. I'm finally leaving this dreaded town!

"Get a good nights sleep, we're leaving in the morning!"

~*~

The next morning, I quickly emptied out my locker and returned my textbooks.

No one said goodbye, or said anything. But when I got to math it was all different.

Carly Atiquila was there, the head cheerleader.

"Oh, your moving? I hope your jailbird of a father doesn't get mad."

Everyone laughed and I fought back tears. She had been the one who found out about the jail thing, and told everyone.

"Now Carly, don't be mean to her. Everyone tell her your gonna miss her."

No one said anything. "Its okay Mrs McCessy. I'll miss you."

I walked out the door and the tears fell.

I walked away from my past life, and now I'm moving on.

Me and my mom drove down the highway, singing to Miss Movin' On by Fifth Harmony.

We drove for 24 hours, and then we saw the sign:

Now entering Berlington, New Jersey.

I squealed. My new life is finally starting.

"Were almost here!" my mom yelled.

"I know! I yelled back.

~*~

An hour later, we pulled into the driveway of our new house. It was a 2 story modern house in a new neighborhood.

I grabbed a box and my mom unlocked the door.

"Wow." i breathed.

The house had 2 staircases going upstairs, and in between them led to a kitchen and next to that a huge living room.

"I know."

Then, there was a knock on the door, and my mom went to open it.

A preppy looking woman in a yellow pantsuit opened, with a plate of cookies. Her facial expression looking happy and cheerful. Like scary cheerful.

"Hi new neighbor! I'm Stacey, your next door neighbor! Here are some cookies to welcome you to the neighborhood!"

She handed my mom a plate of cookies, and then the woman at the door took in my moms apperance.

Flannel shirt and purple nail polish and hair in a messy bun, is apperantly not her style, because she cringed, but tried to hide it.

She breathed for the first time since coming here.

"Well, we're throwing a party for you tonight to get to know you, and so you can get to know the other people in the neighborhood!"

"Oh, uhm that's okay, but-"

"Okay! I'll see you in my yard in 3 hours! welcome! and I'm the house with the yellow shutters and flower boxes!"

"Uhh, okay, see you soon!"

And then she practically skipped out the door.

I turned to my mom. "Is everything about her yellow?"

She burst out laughing. "Well, unpack your clothes, and find something to wear tonight."

"Wait, your not serious about going to this?"

She sighed. "Madelyn, we need a fresh start, and new friends is a start to our fresh start. Unpack a nice shirt and non holey jeans or something."

I set my box down and went to get a box full of clothes.

This was goning to be a long evening.

~*~

After unpacking the box, I chose a band t-shirt and black jeans.

I walked down the stairs, and my mom sighed at my clothing choice but didn't say anything.

"All right, lets go."

We walked out the door, and walked to our new neighbors house. My mom knocked on the door, and a girl about my grade rolled her eyes at me and turned around and called into the house.

"Mom! The new freaks are here!"

Me and my mom exchanged glances.

Then Stacey came to the door, now wearing a lime green dress.

"Hi! sorry about my daughter Sophia. Shes got kinda an attitude. So Madelyn, what grade are you in?"

"I'm a Sophomore."

"So is Sophia. Maybe you guys will end up being friends!"

My mom snorted, and I elbowed her in the ribs.

"Sorry, I'm getting over...a...cold."

I nearly snorted. My mom hasn't gotten sick since i was 7.

"Well, come into the backyard! The whole neighborhood's here!"

She went through the door and me and my mom followed.

"Your getting over a cold?" I stiffled a laugh.

"Im trying to be nice. Fresh start!"

I sighed. Its going to be a fun evening.
