"Crap!" Brielle said throwing the cig down and grinding into the ground and then shoving it into the depths of her pocket. The others followed in suit, the smell still lingering in the air like a stubborn stain on a pure white shirt, causing the air to have a foul stench. People ran onto the field screaming and cheering. Lexi, Brielle, Greyson and Luke shielded themselves from the artificial light, their eyes still accustomed to the dim glimmer of the moon.

"What's going on?" Greyson asked, still acutely awared that if their guilty faces didn't give them away the smell would.

"It's just the carnival team games, we do them every year on the field. Let's leave before someone we know sees us." Luke said glancing around.

"We can go behind the school, there shouldn't be people around that way." Brielle said.

The four made their way to the edge of the the field, passing over energetic people as they walked.

"Alert, Jace is up ahead, reroute." Lexi said veering the group to the left. Lexi led them all the way behind the school, and once she was sure no one was around she sat on a broken wooden crate and crossed her legs. Brielle and Luke joined her on the crate while Grayson leaned against a wall. "So, what's it like have three older stepbrothers?" Brielle, Lexi and Grayson exchanged a look. "It's not too bad." Brielle said with a shrug.
"They're just bothers most times." Lexi said.
"It is weird basically having them as parents?" Luke pressed.
"Um, yeah, but we're used to it I guess." Greyson said picking up a rock and tossing it against a tin can.
"So, my older brother is in college and he's having a party next week. Said I could invite some people, wanna come?" Luke asked.

"Last time you asked me to a party I got in huge trouble." Greyson said, nervously digging the tip of his shoe into the dirt.
"You never did tell me what happened that night? How much trouble were you in?"
"Alot. And you should be thanking me, Garrett was going to call your parents but I talked him out of it."
"Really? I had no idea."
"You're welcome." Greyson grunted remembering his own punishment to his night of fun, and how his sisters tried to help but all attempts to save his ass failed. Luke lit a cigarette for Brielle and she let out a long puff of smoke and they watched it float into the air disappearing into tiny wisps. Lexi pulled the cancer stick from Brielle and let out a puff of her own and traced her finger through it leaving a path behind it.
"Luke?" A voice called out.
"Damn, what does she want now?" Luke cursed.
"You going to go see what she wants?" Lexi asked puffing another cloud.
"Yeah, I swear if she makes me get back on that..."
"Alexis?" Another voiced sounded. Brielle, Lexi and Greyson's eye went wide. "Greyson?" The voiced sounded again.
"Shit." Lexi said grounding the cig under her shoe.
"Brielle?" The voice was undeniably Garrett's.
"Come on." Greyson said handing the box of cigarettes back to Luke. Luke pushed them back. "I can't get caught with them." He said hastily.
"And you think I can?" Greyson demanded.
"Give em to me." Lexi said flustered as she plucked it from Greyson's hands and threw it in the metal trash bin a few feet away. "Anyone have gum?" Lexi asked.
"Or febreeze?" Brielle added. They all shook their heads. "Let's just all learn not to breath." Lexi said.
"Oh yeah, great plan, would you have is set ourselves on fire to disguise the smell?" Greyson retorted.
"Luke!"
"Alexis! Brielle!"
"Luke?"
"Greyson!"
"We are going to die." Brielle noted.
"Come on. Just act normal." Luke said walking towards the voices.
"Cause that will be easy." Brielle said. Following him along with Lexi and Greyson.
"Alexis! Bri..! Where have you been?" Garrett asked once the four came into view, his voice stern.
"Umm, it was really loud out on the soccer field and we didn't want to participate so we were just walking around." Brielle said easily, the lie rolling right off her tongue. Garrett eyed them all, "Did you at least enjoy the carnival?" Luke's mother asked.
"Yeah we did." Lexi said. Garrett glared at her. "I mean, yes ma'am, we did." Lexi corrected under Garrett's scrutiny.
"Yeah mom, we've just running around." Luke reassured.
"Well, it is almost time for the fireworks kids. So let's go." Luke's mom said.
"Oh yeah the fireworks guys! Come on! I've been waiting for those!" Greyson said with urgency laced in his voice.
"Right!" Lexi said following Greyson's lead. Brielle caught on and started to jog away. Luke was not so quick and started to protest, "Luke come on!" Brielle demanded as she took his arm and dragged him away. "You're such an idiot." Brielle said as she rolled her eyes. "What...? Oh!" Luke spoke his mind grasping the concept of why they were so interested in the fireworks. They caught up to Lexi and Greyson and slithered into the crowd of people who awaited the fireworks to go off. "That was way too close for me." Greyson said looking over his shoulder for the fourth time to see if Garrett was anywhere near them. A crack sounded loudly and sparks flew igniting in red and white flames in the sky. All four teenagers looked up, watching the next one soar into the air.

Lexi, Brielle and Greyson dashed into the house. "We still smell like smoke, get in the shower now." Brielle said in a low voice heading to the stairs.
"Hey, all of you, get in the kitchen." Jace said.
"Aww come on Jace, I gotta shower! I'm gross!" Lexi argued.
"Kitchen now." Jace said, his tone unnegotiable. The three siblings shared a weary look before they headed into the kitchen and sat at the table.
"Is homework done?" Dallas asked.
"Yes." Came from all three hastily. Dallas cocked his head.
"All of it?" He pushed.
"Well, I've got some math to finish..." Brielle said truthfully and carefully as math was a touchy subject in and out of school. "Go get it and bring it down here to work on when we're done." Jace ordered from across the kitchen. Brielle answered with a nod and a mental eye roll. "Alexis, Greyson?" Dallas asked.
"Mine is done!" Lexi said gleefully as she stretched.
"So is mine." Greyson said.
"You all have tests this next week, correct?" Dallas asked.
Lexi cried out loud and buried her face in her arms on the table. "I hate tests!" She wailed.
"Yes we know. Don't be so dramatic." Garrett said, speaking for the first time. He poured himself a cup of coffee from the fresh pot her just brewed. "You know coffee will keep you up at night giving adrenaline to your whole body. Brielle said.
"And it makes you shit." Greyson added, which earned him a slap upside the head from Jace.
"Alright, upstairs. Shower and go to bed." Garrett said.
"But it's only like eleven!" Lexi whined.
"Shower, bed." Garrett said again.
"Shower, bed." Lexi mocked in a high voice.
"Alexis Grace, watch yourself." Garrett warned.
"Aye captain." Lexi said as she stood up and walked past Dallas and Jace with Garrett and Brielle behind her. Jace scrunched up his nose. "What's that smell?"
"Is that smoke?" Garrett asked.
