Lexi twirled her pencil in her fingers, she hated English, it was boring. No offense to Jace or anything she just hated the class. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, she had just gotten her phone back that morning. She had waited for two weeks for Dallas to give it back. She glanced at it when Jace was writing on the chalk board. It was from Quinn. "I'm bored." Lexi sent Quinn a glare, he was sitting two seats away from her. She texted back, "Quinn you are sitting two seats away from me."

"And?" He texted. She leaned over and stuck her tongue out at him.

"Alexis am I boring you?" Jace asked. Lexi snapped to attention. "Umm no sir, sorry." Quinn laughed quietly and Lexi smiled and shook her head that he had gotten her into trouble. Jace kept his gaze on her. "Do you find something amusing Miss Holmes?"

"No Mr. King."

"See me after class Miss Holmes." Jace said continuing the lesson.

"Thanks Quinn." Lexi texted.

"That wasn't my fault Gracie." Quinn replied. Lexi sat back against her chair and scowled, yeah she really hated English. As the class came to an end Lexi decided to just try and leave with the rest of the class. The students all stood and filed out the door but before she could leave Jace called her name. Lexi sighed and went to his desk. "Do you want to explain to me why you are not paying attention?"

"Oh, umm, well I saw something outside and was looking at it."

"What was it?"

"What was what?" Lexi asked.

"The thing you saw." Jace said getting irritated.

"Oh it was a bird."

"A bird?"

"Mm-hmm."

"Just go to you next class." Jace said taking off his glasses, rubbing his eyes and handing her a tardy slip. Lexi grabbed it and rushed to her next class, she read the slip Jace gave her. "Alexis is having a hard time paying attention in class. Make her participate." She groaned at the note. She walked into class and handed it to Dallas, her teacher that hour. Dallas read it as she went to take her seat. "Alexis, why don't you take this seat in the front." Dallas advised. Lexi stopped and rolled her eyes, turned around and slunk into the seat right in front of his desk. She took out her notebook and started doodling. Her brain zoned out and she didn't even hear Dallas when he asked a question. "Alexis." Dallas said. She didn't respond. "Alexis." He said louder. The boy behind Lexi tapped her should jerking her to attention. "Hm, what?" She asked. "I asked if you could finish the problem on the board." Lexi looked at the board and took a moment to think. "Oh you foil out the problem and then multiply it by 3pi and then factor out the X and divide the right side by 4 which in turn you have to do to the other side and once you do that you replace the X with the number it originally gave you." She said. Dallas stared at her and room was quiet, he checked his book, "Uh, that's right Alexis, good job." He said stunned. Lexi glanced down and started her drawings again, suddenly uncomfortable with the unwanted attention. Before she knew it class was over and she slung her backpack over her shoulder and left. Dallas quickly walked out of the room and yelled her name. Lexi turned around and walked back to Dallas. "Hey I'm really proud of you, you zoned out most of class but finished the problem a lot of students were struggling on."

"Oh, um thanks." Lexi said, clearly uncomfortable.

"What's wrong, you did well kiddo."

I just don't like to be classified as a nerd or as smart. I only like when the teachers know I'm smart, not the students." Lexi said shuffling on her feet awkwardly.
Dallas took her shoulders and bent down to meet her eyes. "Hey being smart is not something you need to hide. It is a good thing, don't shy from it. It's something to be proud of." Dallas told her. Lexi pushed her hair behind her ear and glanced down. "I'll be checking your math for more errors now that I know how intelligent you are. And don't think I won't check your other classes, being smart is something you use to help you. So if I see lacking grades you best have good answer. Understand?" Dallas asked.
