Dan stumbled to the stairs that morning. His chest hurt, and it hurt a lot. However he was used to it, this happened every once a year, or when ever his heart beat faster than usual. Since his heart was artificial it could handle when a normal heart would beat faster than normal. Therefore he had an excuse to not take gym class, but he also could be scared, so no Halloween for him. This time it was because it had been a year. The beeping was becoming louder and louder, telling him he didn't have much time.
"Mum!" He yells, going over to the stairs and stumbling down them with large thumps. When he fell onto the bottom floor he felt even worse than before.
"Daniel?" His mother calls, coming to the stairs to check on her son. Dan's breath was coming out in short pants as he layed on the floor. He let out a groan of pain and his mother instantly understood. "Oh my gosh it's that day? I totally forgot I'm so sorry!" His mother apologies as she puts her hand on his bare back. She moves her hand to the his left upper back and presses her thumb into an indent in before pushing against it.
You see, Dan's heart needed to be rebooted if he was to stay alive. So every once a year someone in his family, or the nurse since she was notified about his 'condition', would have to reboot him. He had a secret compartment in his chest where his robotic heart was kept, and the only way to get to it was by opening the hatch on his left upper back.
The door lifts up a bit above Dan's regular skin level before moving back and resting on his real skin. The metal felt cold against his back but he was in to much pain from the painful beeping to really care.
His mother then pulled the lever on his heart until it was completely down as far and then let go so it could shot back up to the top. The small screen on his heart to symbolize a heart monitor showed a picture of a battery with a lighting bolt in him to show he was charging again. Dan just layed on the ground, none moving and barely breathing. The only side affect of rebooting was that he was temporarily dead until he had enough power to get through another year.
His mother moved him onto the couch so he'd be more comfortable and then walked into the kitchen to continue to make dinner.
Twenty minutes later, Dan was back to his normal self. "Mum, how many time do in have to remind you to close my back after rebooting me?" Dan asks, trying to reach the small hatch on his back to close it.
"Oh sorry Daniel! I was to focused on getting back to the food." His mother apologies from then kitchen.
"It's fine." He mumbles. "Hatch, close." A low humming sound starts as it closes itself. "Thanks for rebooting me though mum."
"Sweetheart it's no problem, I'm not just going to let you die am I?" She asks him.
"Well no I would hope not." Dan sits up on the couch. "What's for dinner?" He asks as he stretches out his arms.
"Pasta. Is that okay? Marita requested it." His mother says.
"No that's fine. Pasta is nice." Dan replies. Marita was his sister, she was one of the only people Dan cared about, along with his parents. He was her protective older brother and made sure she was always happy and safe.
Speak of his angel, she came bonding down the stairs with her little dress on. "Pasta!" She said happily as she started for the kitchen.
"Wait!" Dan said as he ran up behind her and picked her up. He spun her around twice which made her squeal.
"Danny! I want to eat!" She complains. Marita was ten, and had a lot of energy. Most times Dan couldn't keep up.
"Wait 'till mum's done Rita. Then you can eat." Marita lets out a groan and Dan places her on the couch before going up the stairs.
