Narcissa Malfoy has always been very quiet and reserved, but I have come home to find a completely different person. Walking through the main doors of the manor to find her waiting for me with a big smile and a welcoming hug was odd. Never has this woman shown any signs of affection towards me...something has changed.

“I’m glad you are home” She had said, helping me carry my belongings. I had asked why the change of heart during dinner, but all I got was a simple line that still gives me the shivers.

“Times have changed, Anastasia. My duty is over and I can finally be free…” Even Lucius seemed more alive. Although we didn’t have any sort of deep conversation, we were able to have small chats here and there. Most of them were awkward, but in the process, I discovered two things. One, they had been aware of my family search at school and were willing to tell me the truth, but only if I agreed to the second thing. The second discovery was that they were going to host a gathering for New Year’s Eve with the hope of clarifying any loose ends about who I was. The only bad news was that I had to wait until then, and although I was scared of asking to go over to the muggle world for Christmas, only Narcissa thought it was a great idea. A few nights after my arrival, I heard both of them discussing my previous request in the dining hall. I stayed behind the large doors, trying to see them from the small opening that divided each door.

“It’s her only friend, Lucius. Let her enjoy the day with her muggleborn friend before she finds out…” Narcissa’s voice was soft, the way a mother talks to a child. Lucius simply sighed, raising what sounded to be a glass with ice in it.

“She cannot be seen socializing with those people...They will think we have driven her from her destiny” Lucius said, I take a step closer but hiding from the light.

“Do you think the He would be happy if he saw who she has become? We were trusted with one final act...made an unbreakable vow to save our son, and yet you allow her to be with such families” He sounded disgusted with the idea, making me frown. “This plan was never going to work Lucius! Unlike the horcrux, she has a mind of her own...a very powerful mind…” Narcissa stands up, walking towards the chimney as if trying to hide her face from her husband.

“She will chose the path that was created for her...don’t forget, she may look human, but…” Lucius stops talking, and I slowly start walking away from the door and into the marble staircase. I rush up the stairs, not caring how loud my feet were with each step i took. This was something I was not anticipating. I feel my head spinning, my stomach sinks, making me nauseous. I manage to get to my room, shutting the door ever so lightly and slide on the floor. I take long deep breaths, trying to clear my mind but getting nowhere. That was the most difficult night of the week. Thankfully, Christmas day arrived in a blurr.

~

A knock on my door wakes me up. The snowstorm has blocked the light from my windows, but my room was bright. I take a quick look in the mirror before opening the door.

“Happy Christmas” Narcissa says, carrying a green box with a golden ribbon.

“Happy Christmas...what’s this?” I ask, pointing at the box. She smiles at me, “It’s a little something for tonight, and I figured you will need a nice outfit for our gathering next week.” I fully open the door, letting her in. She places the box on my bed, and waits for me to open them.

I proceed to open the box, it’s content leaving me shocked. I pull out a short red tulle dress, with a thin black belt around it. I put it on the side, noticing the tag from a muggle store. That’s a first.

“Thank you...where did…” I start to ask, but she cuts me off. “I took the time to go out to London and look for a gift, like the ones your friend’s mom gives you...The other one, I order it from Delfina Crimp’s shop. I hope you liked them” I look back at the box, pulling out a completely different dress. This one was a black silk-blend gown, with a silver snake curling elegantly down the back, with thin strings holding the dress in place. This attire was something this family would wear, but not me. I thank her anyway, I won’t deny the dress wasn’t beautiful, but something about it, made me realize it wasn’t for me...but rather the girl they expected me to be.

“I’m glad you liked it...now, get dressed, I’ll have Dinky prepare you something to eat...and Ana, don’t worry about Lucius, you can use the floo network and Draco can take you to your friend’s house” I give her a hug, not sure why but it’s the least I can do after everything she has done for me.

AN: this chapter is quite small since it was written in two sections.
