"Nicky we're in Volborg." I lifted my head off the window and looked around. He chuckled. "What?" "You've got a red mark on your forehead from leaning on the window."
I leaned on his shoulder and closed my eyes. "Come on don't fall asleep on me! We're almost to my house you can sleep tonight." He said shrugging me up.
We pulled up to a drive. "I doubt my dad or brother got the mail." He said pulling up to the mailbox. Then pulled onto the drive. It was nice. "Uh oh family heard I was on my way."
I innerly laughed. "I'm guessing you told them about me?" I asked. "Yup. But they don't know what you look like or do." He told me. I nodded as he pulled off to the side.
A pickup pulled in after we got out. "That's my dad and Jake." I got my bag as Jess did. This guy is super cool. We started walking in. He grabbed my bag from me.
"With those knees you need to rest them up." I rolled my eyes. He even opened the door himself! He set the bags down to hug everyone that greeted him.
I stood back. "Jess is this Nicky?" He took a step to the side. "Yeah." "With the way you talked I thought you were friends with a bull fighter." I'm guessing his mom said? "It's true. She does bullfighting." He told the lady.
She looked shocked. This could be a rough week. I could feel the tension in the room. A feeling of unwelcomeness more like. We put our bags in his room and he let me look around it.
"Want a tour of the town?" He asked. "Would you mind?" I asked. He gestured to follow him. We walked back out. "Wanna come along bro?" Jess asked opening my door. "Sure." I got in and Jess closed my door. His brother got into the backseat while he got into the drivers.
I just rode along as they pointed out certain places as we passed them. Definitely going to give Jess a tour of my town. We lastly went to the fairgrounds. "And this is where we rode Bulls for high school." Jake said from the back.
When we got back to the house everyone was outside. I unbuckled and was about to get out. "Wait." I stopped as Jess jumped out and opened my door for me. I got out looking cautious.
"Don't worry this week will fly by." He whispered to me. Hopefully.
Ten years ago age eight
Nash was sitting next to me in our second grade class. Our teachers know we help each other with two subjects. I'm great at reading already and he's great at math. When one doesn't understand part of it we ask each other for help.It was math time and we had a worksheet after the lesson. "Nash I don't understand this." I whispered to my brother. He looked over at which problem it was. "Ok so your going to subtract this number from that one. Just use your fingers and count down until you've reach that number on your fingers."
I did what he instructed. "Good then your going to do the same thing with the other column." I did that. "Your good to go baby sis. Let me know if you get stuck again."
At reading I helped him out and we got done about the same time. Recess was the last thing we did. Rodney and a few other people played tag with us.
Present day
I still don't feel welcome. Even though everyone is nice to me and knows Jess and I are just friends. Tomorrow we're going to Billings. Can't wait! The major thing is I haven't gotten any sleep the past week. I climbed the tree in the backyard and sat on the thickest branch. "Nicky." I looked down. Jess was standing there looking up at me.
"What?" I asked him. He climbed up and got onto the branch in front of me. "What's wrong?" He asked. "Nothing." He scooted closer. "I know something is wrong. Please tell me."
I looked away from him. "Nicky I know something is wrong." "I'm just tired." I finally said. He closed the space between us. "That's all you had to say."
He pulled me into a reassuring hug. I put my head in the crook of his neck and left it there. He kissed my temple. "I'll let you sleep in my room tonight and I'll take the couch. You'll be more comfortable."
He kissed my cheek. "No matter what my parents or family think of you." I finally put my arms around his neck. He pulled me closer to him and put my legs over his. "You'd have to be the best girl I've ever met even with the history you have."
I lifted my head off his shoulder. "Is that true?" I asked. "I haven't met anyone else like you in my life." He told me. He's so sweet and kind. He kissed my forehead and helped me down.
We went inside the house and to his room. I sat down on his bed and he sat beside me. He pulled me into his arms and laid back. I definitely fell asleep.
