Chapter Eight

Elsie

We're running down the steps, taking two at a time trying not to trip and fall because let's face it, that wouldn't be fun.  I watch as Maddie looks back nervously at Markell and Violet not wanting to leave her behind.  We reach the bottom and stop still.

"So where exactly are we going?"  Taylor asks Maddie keeping watch for our zombie like friends.

"I'm not sure, I need to concentrate and try to connect with Rachael, I've never done it and I have no idea whether it is actually possible but it's worth a try."  We all stand there awkwardly as Maddie sits on the steps and closes her eyes.  Chelsea taps her foot impatiently not liking how we're acting like bait just standing and waiting to be eaten.  I walk around in circles peering down every street searching for any changes.  After ten minutes Chelsea's legs have given up and she is sitting on the step next to Maddie staring at her as if she is trying to make her hurry up.  Taylor is tense and on edge, his eyes are flickering everywhere, he will not relax.

"I'm going for a quick wander, I won't go far don't worry."  He says walking out of sight as he turns the corner.

"Where is he going?" Chelsea asks throwing her hands up in aggravation, she lets out a sigh and lays back onto the step.

"I don't know but he's obviously heard or seen something.  I hope Rachael's ok, I mean yeah I suppose she's been a bitch to us multiple times but she has her moments.  Don't you think?"  I look at Chelsea, she slowly shakes her head at me acting as if I have just said something incredibly stupid.

"Will you guys please be quiet, I need to concentrate and I can't when you are staring at me and you are speaking my feelings out loud!  Shhhh!"  She closes her eyes and frowns deeply with concentration.

"Ooo! Ok Miss I've got attitude! If I get eaten it will be all your fault and trust me I will be very angry and you don't want to see that.  It's not worth it and it's not all that pretty either."  Maddie pushes Chelsea giving her another warning, Chelsea stands up and heads in the same direction as Taylor.  "You are unbelievable Maddie, I don't know why I'm even helping you if you're going to treat me like this!"  She disappears and I roll my eyes, she is so dramatic at times, it makes me miss my best friend Mae, there must be a way to get her back.  I slump down on the steps and stare up at the sky, sometimes I wish my life was different, my childhood mainly.  If I could do anything, I would bring my Mum back and I would get to know her, my parents would be happy and so would I.   I can't deny that part of me hates my life but new things make it worthwhile, make it good.  Alex, my gorgeous boyfriend, my new friends and my new life.  Yeah it's messed up and there is always the risk of dying every day but If I'm being honest with myself, I wouldn't change it.  A loud screaming makes me sit up, it's coming from the way Taylor and Chelsea went.

"Go, Taylor and Chelsea are being cornered by Wynter and they're trying to hold him off.  I've nearly connected with Rachael so go."  I stand up and run as fast as I can, I turn the corner and look around frantically trying to find them.  Another scream makes me throw my hands over my ears, I throw one hand up and a shield surrounds me blocking out the sound.  I run forward and turn another corner, I see Chelsea standing in front of Wynter screaming into his face.  Wynter is holding his head and shaking his body, Taylor is nowhere to be seen, where is he?  I walk forward and scream as a hand pops into my shield.  The shield stretches until Taylor is inside of it standing beside me.

"Hey Elsie, I hate it when she does that it really hurts!"  I smile at him and point at Chelsea and Wynter.

"What should we do about that?"  Taylor looks worried.
