Chapter Fourteen
Elsie
All I can hear as I walk towards the stairs is Chelsea shouting at Taylor, I thought it was very amusing. I push my hands into my jacket pocket and feel the crumpled up piece of paper that Rose gave me yesterday. I pull it out and open it up.
"2,6,8,3" I whisper not sure what this is meant to be. Rose had said that it will take me to where I want to go, what did she mean by that? I quietly sit down on the stairs and examine the numbers. "2,6,8,3" I whisper again. I shake my head and crumple the paper back up, ramming it into my pocket. I look over at my keys sitting on the cabinet next to the door. It would just be a quick visit, just to see how he is, I wouldn't be very long. Kendrick, Benson and hope are there right? They will make sure that nothing happens, it will be fine. Do it Elsie, just go, you know you have to. You need to see him or you are going to go crazy. My inner self shouts inside of me, encouraging me to do it. I stand up and walk over to my keys, I play with them for a bit before making my final decision. I turn towards the door and open it up as quietly as I can, I don't want anybody knowing where I am going. I walk around the back of the house and unlock my car, it's still dark outside but the sun is creeping up. I start the car and I turn up the heater onto full power. After sitting in the warm car for five minutes, I pull away from the house and drive out of the City.
I am driving down a quiet and empty road, it is stunningly beautiful. As the sun rises, it reveals a sparkling field that stretches for miles. The icy blades of grass reflect the sun's rays, they shine into the brightening sky like tiny stairways into heaven. I stop the car for a second and step out into the cold. I take in a deep breath, the air is so fresh, it fills my lungs making them tingle. I look up at the sky above me.
"I wish you were here mum." I whisper whilst wrapping my arms around myself to keep warm. "I miss you every day." I sigh and get back into the car starting it up again. As I look through the now fogged up windscreen, I see tiny balls of light emerging from the grass. Using my sleeve, I wipe away the steam on the glass and look closer. The balls of light appear to be flying in and out of the grass making it looks greener and stand taller. They must be fire flies, I've never seen a fire fly before, I thought you could only see them at night. My breath slowly fogs the glass again as I sit watching for a moment. When I can no longer see them, I take that as a sign to leave. I open one of my windows and wait for a clearing in the glass to be big enough for me to see. I begin to drive again, feeling nervous for what I am about to do.
I pull up outside of the jail like building that Lea calls the 'holding shed'. I shiver unpleasantly at the thought of Alex being held in there like a prisoner. After turning the car off and locking it, I hesitantly walk up to large metal gates. They are so intimidating, they tower over me warning me not to go in. I search the gates for a handle but I can't see one, I push on them but they don't budge. I can feel the frustration building inside of me, I hammer the gates making them rattle loudly. I turn to walk back to my car when I notice a large rectangle keypad on the wall beside me. How am I supposed to know the combination? I sigh an aggravated sigh and head back to the car shoving my hands into my pockets. I suddenly remember the piece of paper that Rose gave me. A rush of excitement shoots through me as I pull it out and run up to the keypad.
