"You're what?" I almost choked.
Kacy sighed before saying "Do I really have to say it again?"
"How—how long have you known?" I asked, still astonished from her revelation.
"Well...I think I've known for a very long time." She twiddled her thumbs before looking up at me again and biting her lip. "I only came to terms with it in sophomore year. The only people that know are my sister, Rebecca, my parents and well, you."
I moved slightly closer to her. "Why didn't you tell me? Did you really think that I would care about your sexual orientation? Because I don't."
"If I'm honest, I didn't know what your reaction would be. In our group we only ever talked about dating boys, not girls. I always felt like coming out to you guys would... I don't know...alienate me from the group."
"Wait did you say your parents know? They're cool with it?"
"I didn't think my parents would be. I was shitting myself when I told them. They weren't exactly happy but they told me that they still loved me no matter what.
"I'm glad." I placed my hand on her shoulder. "I'm 100% sure that you being a lesbian will not affect any of the girls' opinion of you."
"How are you so sure that it won't?"
"Because, Kacy, we have been your friends for years. We're your friends because of your kindness, generosity and your personality. You being gay doesn't change you as a person so why would it bother any of us?"
She pulled me into a tight hug and let out a sigh. "You don't know how much I needed to hear that."
I pulled back slightly and looked into her eyes. "I will always be there for you, okay? Don't ever forget it."
"Okay." She nodded.
I gave her a quick smile before a thought popped into my head. "Hey, Kacy, who is this girl that broke your heart?"
She flinched before saying. "I don't think now is the right time to tell you."
I raised an eyebrow but decided not to push it. After all, she had already told me about her being a lesbian which must have been hard enough.
"Why do you think she was so harsh about it?" I wondered.
Surely you can't go from liking someone to ignoring them with the snap of a finger. I would have to ask Barclay that question since he was an expert in that field.
"Well, a part of me wants to believe that she didn't mean it." She shrugged. "I do know that her parents are homophobic."
"Oh." I said before taking a handful of chips.
Later on, Kacy and I fell asleep halfway through The Last Song. I gushed about how gorgeous Liam Hemsworth was and Kacy said that she'd go for Miley too. It was weird, I had never heard her say someone was attractive before.
When I woke up that morning, Kacy was gone and there was a note on my dresser:
Thanks for the help, Rhi! Love u + see you in school
-Kacy
I was kind of grateful that I wasn't going to have to explain to my parents why my friend came to our house into the middle of the night and slept over. My mom would probably freak out.
