I found the main office and opened the glass door. It seemed to be empty.
"Hellooo? Anyone there? Hello?" I called. Suddenly a head popped up from behind the desk.
"Yes?" A small women with greying hair replied.
"Oh um," now that I knew I really was talking to someone and not an empty room, I found myself feeling very nervous.
"I, um. I'm Lacey. I'm new?" the womens strict expression vanished from her face.
"Oh, you're new. I do apologise. Take a seat, I'll get someone to show you around." I sat down on the blue stuffed cushion that lay on the seat and fiddled with my fingers, something I always do when I'm nervous. After 5 minutes of sitting, a girl with long, wavy light pink hair walked in.
"Hey Mrs. Davis. I got your message." she directed to the teacher. "who am I showing around again?"
"Thank God. Ava, you're a life saver! Lacey's over there. Show her the school and take her to her to her lockers. You know what to do anyway. Here's her timetable and health and safety leaflet." Ava took the things and walked over to where I was sitting.
"Lacey, right?"
"Yeah." I said. I tried to make my voice sound calm because Ava seemed nice and she'd make a good friend, especially as I knew no one here. Except Luke, obviously. But despite my efforts it came out quiet and wavered. She looked at me understandingly.
"Nervous, huh?" I laughed slightly.
"You could say that." I replied.
"I was new here a couple of years ago. But you'll soon learn where everything is. Just stick with me." I immediatly assumed she felt sorry for me.
"No it's okay. You don't want to hang around with someone like me." I said sadly.
"Lacey. I want to, I swear. Plus I'm on the buddy system, which means I literally can't leave you alone anyway."
"What?" My forehead crinkled in confusion. Ava laughed.
"It means that I'm your mentor, I'll show you where everything is and what's socially exceptable. I was signed up because my grades were slipping." She added, seeing my face. She didn't seem like the type of person to do anything like this.
"Oh, then I guess that's okay." Half of my worry had been taken of my shoulders. I had made a friend, and that sounded weird but it was an achievement for me.
Ava handed me my stuff and we walked out of the office. As we walked to the main building, Ava made conversation.
"So, when I applied to be your mentor, it said you were on a photography scholarship. I'll take you there first because I'm taking that class too and because we have it last period so you'll need to know where it is." She said as we made a beeline for the tall building.
"Is that why you applied for me? Because we're on the same course?" I joked.
She grinned. "Yeah. That and you're British." I laughed. I guessed a lot of people were going to mention that.
"So, do you know anyone who goes here?"
"You, my cousin Toby and Luke Brooks." Ava stopped and turned me around to face her.
"Oh my god. You're kidding, right?" Her eyes had widened in shock.
"No, why would I be?" I asked, confused.
"He's literally the most popular boy here. He hangs around with the jocks and the bitchy girls. How do you know him?" I ignored how she emphasized the you and answered.
