"I-I-I " he stuttered slightly taken a back by my sudden outburst,I have to admit it was very out of character.
"I was just busy" he said I gave him a look in return as if to say 'really?' "I didn't see you?" He slightly questioned and I couldn't really think of anything to do so I gave him the look for a second time. I could practically hear his brain ticking away trying to find an excuse or some way to get out off this some what awkward situation. He sighed, obviously he couldn't think of a good excuse.
"Lacey, look. I'm really sorry for acting the way I did today. It's just.." he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "I have a lot going on right now." My rage still hadn't subsided.
"And why does that mean you can't talk to me?"
"Because..um. Urgh, I can't tell you right now. I really want to but I can't, and it would really help me out if you were cool about it." Luke looked tired. More tired than I'd seen him. Or maybe I was only just noticing it now. Whatever his reason, I didn't want him to cause him anymore problems than there already apparently were.
"Okay."
He looked shocked, like for a second he was convinced I would still be annoyed at himand then he smiled genuinely, like I'd just given him the best news in the world.
"Thank you, Lace." I felt all my rage drain away as he said those three words. I mirrored his smile.
"Thats okay. I'm sorry for shouting, I didn't realise-"
"Lace, it's okay. I promise. Plus you're really cute when you're mad." I felt my face redden.
"Shut up. Okay come on. Let's go get those papers". I said as I tried to change the subject. Just as Luke and I both turned to go I heard a small cough from behind us. We both turned to see who the noise had come from.
It was Ava. I was so caught up with Luke that I had completely forgotten she was there. Stood behind her, looking as equally confused was Mr Jones.
"Damn guys, if you're gonna cry about it I'll get the papers." he said as he pushed passed us to the door. Before either of us could explain he had gone. I turned back to Ava.
"I'm sooo sorry! I guess I forgot you were there." I admitted to Ava, with what I hoped was an apologising smile.
"Don't worry Lacey. Oh my gosh that was so cool. It was like a movie! I'm not gonna lie I was kind of disappointed when you made up." Luke and I both laughed at how excited Ava was. Ava froze. She must have realised Luke was still there and she turned bright red, which only encouraged our laughter. Luke gradually stopped laughing and said, "Hey, now that Mr Jones is gonna get the papers, you guys wanna get some food or something?"
"Sure."
"Yes!" Ava practically screeched. "I mean, yeah, I guess. Whatever. I don't really care anyway." Luke raised his eyebrows at me. I tried not to laugh at Ava's obvious crush on Luke.
"Thats a yes then. Come on." Luke led us out of school and to a small diner.
"Wow, what a creative name." I said sarcastically as we stood outside looking up at the neon flashing sign that read 'Burger' Luke smirked.
"Not really, Lacey." Said Ava, not picking up on the sarcasm. Luke held open the heavy red door for us and we made our way over to a booth, Luke on one side, opposite me and Ava on the other.
"So, Ava. I haven't seen you around before, who do you normally sit with?" Avas eyes widened and she blinked a few times like she was in shock from being asked a question by Luke Brooks. After a couple of seconds of silence started to speak.
"Mackenzie, Rosie, Alfie, Jack, James. And Fey." she said every word as if she had recited it in her head before saying it aloud. I noticed that when Ava had said Fey, Lukes smile had vanished.
"Fey?" he said, "as in... Fey Richards?" He looked guilty. I couldn't think of why he possibly could be until I remembered a conversation we had had earlier in the day.
"As in the one you slept with? Yes." It took Ava a couple of seconds to realise what she had said.
"Oh my god," she said to Luke, who now looked very embarrassed, "I didn't mean to say that. I'm sorry."
"No it's okay. I just.. I guess that whole thing happend a while ago. I haven't really thought about it. I'm different now. I wouldn't... Ignore her like that." after he had spoken we all went quiet for a moment. I had no intention of breaking the silence, for some reason the idea of Luke sleeping with someone made me feel sick. Eventually though, it was the waitress asking for our orders that broke the silence.
"Three chocolate milshakes please." Luke said with a wink. The waitress giggled and walked away.
"Is it really so hard not to flirt for three seconds?" I said jokingly to Luke.
"How can I not flirt when you're around?" I blushed for the billionth time and we all began to laugh and talk again. Even Ava joined in occassionally. There was still a thoughT in the back of my head though.
Luke wouldn't talk to me again tomorrow. And I didn't know if I could stand that.
